@ Paula, good morning!

09:29 - Kim Caise
same here Paula - having trouble finding those opportunities

09:51 - Kim Caise

09:51 - Carolyn Stanley
That is so hard for us "elders" to comprehend; we forget that our young people don't have the experience we have. We have to get rid of our assumptions that students today have any comprehension of life without these tools.

10:09 - Kim Caise

10:21 - stidmama
will travis' prezi be available afterward? would love to see it a little more leisurely

10:32 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
@Kim I plan on checking it out a lot this summer. I will be on the lookout for opportunities.

go ahead and click play. I will stop it soon

14:21 - Travis Allen
It definitely has some bias pieces in it

14:29 - Carolyn Stanley
I think that is changing, Travis. In our district, we make great use of technology tools, and students have a lot of choice in creating projects to demonstrate their learning from videos, to Prezi to GoAnimate to Glogster, etc.

22:15 - Carolyn Stanley #2
How exciting!

22:24 - stidmama
Clearly Travis has had access to lots of technology throughout his life, which is not true of all students in our classrooms. How can a teacher successfully integrate tech into curriculum while neither slowing down the kids who are already surrounded by it, nor leaving behind the kids who have neither internet nor mobile tech outside of school? Has any other teacher successfully provided additional time in school or outside of school for those students who would benefit from extra time to explore the tech outside of deadline-driven projects? [These questions were the focus of my master's paper, and at the time the answers were not satisfying to me.] Not all schools can provide home internet and computers for low-income students, not all students can come in to school early or stay late.

22:27 - @teachteKBeck(Kristen)
I'll have to follow all of you guys and experience it online!

22:41 - Arthene Baskin

22:59 - Susie @shighley

28:22 - stidmama
My neighborhood school district (we are rural) has a tech coordinator who is exploring getting ipads with digital textbooks. The issue continues to be expense, as well as whether there is really enough support (or indeed, the selection of texts that make sense).

28:59 - Carolyn Stanley #2
@Lorna - I did - and it lists the USB -wireless headset-as the default - the YouTube video came through fine - it switched back to the laptop speaker the minute Travis started speaking

29:20 - roxanne clement
is the survey available for us to view?

29:29 - Carolyn Stanley #2
Yes - I had hit play - I could hear the video = oh, well - I'll problem solve later.

29:32 - Reba @jghfoundation08
this young man is an awesome teenagers. This lets me know that we as teachers are doing a great job

29:49 - Reba @jghfoundation08
oops an awesome teenager

30:03 - stidmama
Travis, I appreciate your experiences and enthusiasm. It is wonderful to get input from someone who has "lived" as a mobile learner.

30:11 - Carolyn Stanley #2
I have been using a modified flipped classroom approach with my technology tutorials.

30:13 - shukufa
yes very good

30:27 - EileenK
PD is the key with teachers

30:28 - Susie @shighley
Agree. Too many schools are starting initiatives without planning.

30:33 - lynn castiglione
Hi Travis! It's exciting to see how far your iSchool Initiative has come since I first met you at Mobile experience in PHX AZ! :-) Congratulations!!

30:34 - @teachteKBeck(Kristen)
It is so incredible Travis how you became proactive and an advocate for students is such a great wa!y

32:02 - Carolyn Stanley #2
Travis is a great example of how one person can indeed make a change -and how collaboration can facilitate the change

32:24 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle) #2
Anyone reading Tony Wagner's Creating Innovators? We need to allow our students to play, find their passion, and figure out their purpose.

33:04 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle) #2
Travis is an excellent example of this.

33:06 - Carolyn Stanley #2
That issue of "failure" is so key - we keep hearing about "failing" schools - "failing" according to what standards!

33:10 - stidmama
A question for Travis: How do you see tech integration as working alongside f2f skills such as conversation and hands-on science or other activities in a classroom or learning environment? Developmentally, young children as well as adolescents benefit from real-life "mucking about" and using their whole bodies in learning.

33:59 - Carolyn Stanley #2
I admire Travis' energy and passion. This must be an exhausting schedule.

34:43 - Doug
Sounds like Travis is making his own "dent in the universe"...

35:48 - Carolyn Stanley #2
I do believe that we need to broade the iSchool initiative in terms of wireless devices - and I believe that Travis is doing that. We do not have to be limited to just Apple devices.

36:01 - stidmama
@Carolyn: so true!

36:39 - Lori R
Jason is so right

36:49 - Doug
Some of our K-8's have to have their parents carry their backpacks!

37:46 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle) #2
We had to go to wheeled school bags becuase 4th graders couldn't carry regular backpacks.

37:47 - clinds
Doing an iPad pilot program at my school. Some students like keeping notes and reading on iPad but other students find it more effective to use paper. I think we need to let students figure out what works best for them.

38:15 - shukufa
agree with you

38:33 - Carolyn Stanley #2
I can not understand what textbook producers were thinking - all those glossy pages look good, but my goodness, I can barely heft one social studies book. At least the earth science texts our school purchased had a separate book for eachunit of study. Of course, our science teachers are now using these books only as an adjunct to all the wonderful on-line resources.

38:36 - Valia R @trulygreenfish
@clinds good point..some but not always all.. :)

38:39 - stidmama
Because one of my sons had a 504 plan, we were able to require copies of texts at home as well as school, but the other boy I worried about him because of the heavy backpack. Digital texts would have helped (but of course when they were in elementary school such tech was not yet available).

38:47 - Susie @shighley
Sometimes I remember better things I physically write, design, arrange. I need to be more tech savvy in that regard.

39:02 - Kim Caise

39:04 - roxanne clement
textbook publishers are making money, lots of it

39:32 - roxanne clement

39:44 - Lori R
If I can do it so can anyone

39:44 - Patti R
i was excited to see that the 100th country to visit our class blog was Niue, except I had never heard of it, so if course I researched it...a small island in the South Pacific, and yet they became the first free wifi nation in 2003....if they can do it, can't we?

40:00 - Carolyn Stanley #2
I have done technology integration for 14 years, and I never bought a textbook. I created all of my own lessons, and that has worked out very well.

40:04 - stidmama
@Susie, I am the same way -- I benefit from the physical act of writing/doodling on paper in a way that typing on a computer doesn't. When I was in grad school I bridged the gap using a livescribe pen. But that paper and the pens are expensive.

40:16 - Susie @shighley
I had a wise tech support person tell me to think about how far I've come, not how much more I have to learn!

40:16 - Valia R @trulygreenfish

We need to bring message 1 to our legislators - the governor in our state wanted teachers to be exemplary right out of the gate or be considered a failure and have certification pulled - thank goodness folks with more level heads did not pass that legislation.

41:41 - @teachteKBeck(Kristen)
@ipadsammy, yes!!

This may be a crazy question, are you saving all your notes from class online so it can be accessed anywhere and never lost?

41:58 - roxanne clement
It's all about helping the learner find the passion/ interest to learn

41:59 - shukufa
we need to accept thise changing

42:17 - Kim Caise

42:20 - Susie @shighley
Are there specific days you will be at ISTE?

San Francisco on the tour?

45:53 - roxanne clement
personalized learning

46:00 - EileenK
Is Philadelphia on the tour?

46:19 - Susie @shighley
So glad you also include filter. Now there is so much information, and students (and adults) need to know how to filter and apply.

46:32 - Kim Caise
great point Susie

46:35 - roxanne clement
extends learning beyond the school day....24/7 learning

46:44 - stidmama
Thank you, Travis -- that is a great way to think about the issue of differing levels of readiness.

46:50 - Susie @shighley
Whenever you wonder about something you can look!

46:58 - Kim Caise
it can definitely be overwhelming and many teachers give up saying there is too much to learn or know about mobile learning

47:15 - Carolyn Stanley #2
@clinds -looking back through comments and saw your about some students like to use paper - I agree - differentiation of learning - multiple tools

47:54 - roxanne clement
my students eagerly work outside of class when they are engaged and using technology

47:57 - Kim Caise

48:07 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle) #2
Teachers need to stop worrying about students who don't have mobile devices. There are many places where students didn't have access to textbooks but that didn't stop the teaching and learning.

49:18 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle) #2
@Lynn yes, I'm using Edmodo to keep on students learning over the summer.

49:35 - Kim Caise
that is so awesome Paula!

49:52 - Kim Caise
you will have to present in September and tell us what you did, how it went, etc.

50:01 - @teachteKBeck(Kristen)
Off to T-Ball!! Have a great rest of your weekend, see you all next week!!!

50:18 - EileenK
I would enjoy learning how you use Edmodo for the summer learning, too.

50:19 - Lori R
I am hilarious during my SKYPE office hours

50:26 - Kim Caise
Kristen will be presenting for us next week!

50:41 - Kim Caise
she will be our featured teacher

50:43 - Kim Caise

50:51 - @janwells
Thanks Travis and Classroom 2.0 gotta go!

51:06 - Susie @shighley
I am so glad you see the importance of F2F and human interactiion

51:07 - @teachteKBeck(Kristen)
Yikes!! I am slightly nervous:) and very excited at the same time!!

51:09 - clinds
@Carolyn - Since our school invested in iPads for students, I think some teachers felt like they needed to have students using them and required them to use iPads to take notes. A number of students were really unhappy with this and felt like they should have the option to use paper, as it was quicker and more effective for them. We need to give students choice and let them find out what works best for them.

51:14 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle) #2
@Kim I would love to . Jan Wells and I are doing tech lessons with students through Edmodo over the summer. She's is Kansas and I'm in Louisian.

51:24 - Kim Caise
awesome Paula!

51:24 - shukufa
thanks travis for such good presentation wish you success

51:53 - @ipadsammy
Thanks Travis!!

Interesting that technology is leaping ahead, while pedagogy is lagging. Are networking and interacting the new pedagogy - maybe flipped classrooms...?

Move outside your comfort zone

53:58 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle) #2
Lots of teachers are using online spaces like Edmodo to have summer reading groups for their students.

54:10 - Carolyn Stanley #2
@clinds - I agree

54:10 - Sofia
education can not Wait!

54:20 - Lorna Costantini

54:29 - Arthene Baskin
You said it!

54:37 - Lorna Costantini
sorry getting ahead of myself

54:46 - Doug
Kids love competition - injecting it into reading, math, etc. is a good strategy, as long as it's kept 'civil'

54:52 - Lorna Costantini
Kim will be telling us who are next guest will be

56:15 - Carolyn Stanley #2
I just found a solution for my wireless headset. I have the webinar on my iPad using Splashtop, and I have my wireless headset connected to my iPad through Bluetooth, and NOW I can hear the conversation between Kim and Travis and all through the wireless headset. What a workaround!!!!! I know this is off topic, but it is an example of problem solving that I try to use with my students all the time.

56:46 - Lorna Costantini
COngrats Carolyn

57:06 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle) #2
Way to go, Carolyn.

57:30 - Susie @shighley
Yes, but competition can be overused. Like our State Supt. saying schools and teachers will be better with competition.

58:29 - Susie @shighley
How about the students who are in last place?

58:39 - Carolyn Stanley #2
I so agree with Travis - I am an oldster -65- but I learn things so much better through the video/audio. I still love to read - especially for pleasure - but documentaries and non-fiction learning is so effective through video/audio message.

58:55 - Doug
Competition is best when there are rewards, but no penalties...

59:01 - stidmama
@Carolyn -- so the mobile device came in handy today? ;-)

59:14 - Carolyn Stanley #2
Yes, indeed!

59:16 - Laura Sheehy
Great that you're not competing for a grade!

59:39 - Doug
Great session - thanks!

@Travis - did you know that Megan Wilson did a Classroom 2.0 show last June2011, I believe? You might want to look at it in the archives, if not. She was talking about creating iBooks. Of course, so much has changed since then.

Travis, a public school like you described is already in its planning and implementation stage. A group of educators and community leaders in Columbia, SC were approved a charter for the first STEM Centric, Blended Public school of its kind where the majority students' on campus time will be spent in face-to-face collaboration as you described with the mission of developing citizen scienctists. We have one year to finish pulling everything together, so time is of the essence. What connections and resources can you offer as we develop a model of our vision of a 21st century learning environment that you have clearly articulated?

1:04:41 - Carolyn Stanley #2
Thank you, Kim. Great show, as usual.
