1:1 ipads

03:54 - Peggy George
that sounds like a "formal" plan @Joan :-)

04:06 - BJ Shackleford
we have a 2 to 1 environment

04:07 - Susie @shighley
we will in a couple of months, so is that a yes or a no?

04:18 - Joan Young (flourishingkids)
Yes, that's what I voted, Peggy..though there are some issues with it and always looking for more ideas

04:19 - Michelle @cordym
I would go with yes Susie;-) Close enough!

04:25 - Lorie Moffat
Hi Lorna, I'm here.

04:28 - Peggy George

05:40 - @beckitharp
@debbie, you can do it on your profile.

05:53 - Peggy George
that is absolutely hilarious @Susie!!!! :-) and true!!!!

06:04 - dotty #2
We had schools with 1:1 programs but the loss was too much for the district. Kids were selling laptops to their gang friends and them reporting them lost or stolen.

09:42 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)

13:54 - SEMSLibraryLady
Thanks, Peggy!

14:00 - Sheryl
store on the cloud

14:05 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
@Cindy my students have presented to other teachers during their PD sessions in other parts of the US using GHO (Google Hangouts). They have presented how we use blogs, Edmodo, and Skype.

14:08 - Susie @shighley
I still like Blackboard better than the other platforms where I attend webinars, or maybe it's just the way you allow us to interact so much here.

14:14 - Wes Fryer
Great question: "Where are all the digital products students are producing going?!"

14:17 - Debbie Boatwright
We have no money just ended our integration program and it was replaced with a data manager Thanks to the Feds

14:22 - Susie @shighley
So many webinars you have no sense of the other attendees, or even how many there are

14:29 - @wilsandrea
@Wes - agreed! Great questions

14:30 - Peggy George
even student teachers were required to create those HUGE binders (portfolios) to represent their abilities and achievements. So glad it can now be digital!!!

14:38 - Cindy Medeiros
I am planning to use digital portfolios in my digital literacy and programming classes next year

14:46 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
@bethstill I haven't but am thinking I might. Wish I had a Google Summit near me.

15:00 - Peggy George
:-) Instagram!!!!

15:04 - Kathy Cassidy
Digital portfolios are a great way to encourage kids to do their best work--it will have an audience.

15:18 - Michelle @cordym
Great point Kathy.

15:25 - Peggy George
the tools we have available now for creating digital portfolios are amazing! Evernote is a fabulous way to create portfolios!

15:28 - Michelle @cordym
Curation!

15:35 - @wilsandrea
Love it - students can create, populate and curate their own digital presence!

16:02 - Tom Daccord
Yes, Evernote is a great curation tool.

16:08 - Sheryl
Intergration is an issue that can be resolved with little or no money if there are people at your school who will try to work together.

16:09 - Peggy George
all of Holly's slides are in this google presentation: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1BycGPmmwu73Qt9Bzj_s8Lk4oYUPRsQT6SuIbj-t6t5A/edit?usp=sharing

16:26 - Peggy George

16:32 - dotty #2
This is great. I will be doing a poster session in Vancouver BC at IASE in July, this is great information I can share.

16:34 - BJ Shackleford
some teachers use edline to put their work in folders saved for the year

16:42 - Peggy George
terrific @Dotty!!

17:02 - Cindy Medeiros
@paula, thanks for the info on using hangouts

17:14 - Sheryl
Have you told him?

17:15 - Peggy George
great point about how visuals can be distractions rather than contributing to the content!

17:27 - Joan Young (flourishingkids)
My students have kidblogged, created on explaineverything, made movies, etc.. they sort through and make a reflective presentation on their fave projects and put the reflection on their own google site that is updated each year..I know there is probably a better way..always refining

17:39 - Peggy George
people even use them to find their future soulmates :-)

18:08 - Carolyn Stanley
This presentation should be shared with students.

18:10 - Peggy George
that is a great word cloud! What is that created with ?

18:11 - Pat Judd
I started blogging last year. This is a perfect next step for both my students and me.

18:16 - Peggy George
Tagxedo?

18:43 - Pat Judd
This fits well with AVID as well.

18:44 - Michelle @cordym
@Peggy, will there be a link to watch this over again after the session? THis is gold!

18:47 - Joan Young (flourishingkids)
The important factor of audience.. such a key lesson

18:53 - Cindy Medeiros
my students are creating a website, via Edublogs on digital citizenship, which I will share with the other teachers in the school

18:54 - Peggy George
curation is a new concept for students but so important to understand! such a powerful way to learn!

19:05 - Debbie Boatwright
@Holly what program are you using for your students blogs?

19:10 - BJ Shackleford
tagxedo is like wordle except that you can chanage the shape of the picture for example lincoln' s head. Awesome site

19:31 - Kim Caise
yes ,we record every session and post them to our website http://live.classroom20.com/archive-and-resources.html

19:34 - Peggy George
yes this entire presentation/recording will be posted in our archives after the show (recording, chat log, mp3 and all of the links)

19:34 - dotty #2
Old school is out new school is in. Mindset from the past must be changed.

19:44 - Michelle @cordym
Thank you @Kim for link.

19:58 - @wilsandrea
Kids reflect on learning before posting it online - great aspect of ePortfolios

20:08 - Pat Judd
Cindy, would you be willing to share viw Twitter? @tinuviel0922

20:11 - Peggy George
maybe Holly will share these video links with us so I can add them to the Livebinder! :-)

20:31 - Jan Wells
Hi Peggy, Joan, Beth, Jackie, and all

20:32 - Cindy Medeiros

My daughter thought the California mission project was to send students to other countries

21:15 - Joan Young (flourishingkids)
We don't build those in my class..instead we explore the "people" involved.. social justice issues, etc.. Love the idea of using minecraft

21:16 - Cindy Medeiros
That is cool!

21:18 - @wilsandrea
Cool minecraft example!

21:24 - BJ Shackleford
mind craft is a game?

21:35 - Tom Daccord

22:32 - @wilsandrea
LOVE Google Apps

22:38 - Aunttammie
Been trying for years to get it!

22:52 - Carolyn Stanley
Our tech ed teacher worked with the English teacher - Using Sketchup, kids created all the different locations in To Kill A Mockingbird - then we took .jpgs of each location and put into a Voice Thread presentation, and kids went in and explained why they designed their building as they did referencing the novel directly.

23:08 - sarahjane
I love explain everything

23:17 - @wilsandrea
agreed

23:17 - Peggy George
I will create a youtube recording of this show so you will be able to embed it anywhere :-) It will be in the blog archive post later today.

23:21 - dotty #2
Digital portfolios is also great for high schoolers to showcase to potential employers.

23:24 - jackiegerstein

Hi Jackie!!!!

23:34 - SEMSLibraryLady

23:39 - Joan Young (flourishingkids)
Hi Jackie!

23:42 - Wes Fryer
My son shared a k12online video preso last year on "Creating & Playing in Minecraft" http://k12onlineconference.org/?p=1195

23:45 - Kathy Cassidy
When a student digitizes their learning, they can show their thinking. On paper, you only see the work.

23:52 - Peggy George
nothing is clickable on slides uploaded to Collaborate

23:57 - @wilsandrea
@Kathy - good point!

23:59 - jackiegerstein
Hi Peggy!

24:01 - Susie @shighley
Definitely have to watch this again to keep up with all the great info being shared.

24:01 - Kim Caise
i am a big supporter of google apps for ed but it was very expensive for my last district to convert to using it. i thought it was all free to use with students

24:09 - Cindy Medeiros
Love VoiceThread!

24:14 - BJ Shackleford
love this pic

24:26 - Sheryl

24:28 - Peggy George
We had Helen Barrett as a guest presenter a couple of years ago! She is absolutely the most awesome digital portfolio guru!!!

24:36 - jackiegerstein
She is

24:38 - Carolyn Stanley
We have Google Apps for Education Account for our whole district - no cost that I'm aware of.

24:56 - Maureen
@kim what did you pay for? I paid 0

24:58 - Wes Fryer
Holly is articulating the #create2learn educational philosophy

25:03 - jackiegerstein
Multiple choice tests serve no purpose

25:03 - Kathy Cassidy
Yes! I like to use AudioBoo to record students reading fluency.

25:07 - Debbie Boatwright
how would you do this on a pc

25:08 - Debbie Boatwright
?

25:15 - Aunttammie
Kim, that's been our hang up. They say they are free, but our it guy says it costs

25:17 - Kathy Cassidy

25:19 - Sheryl
AudioBoo;D

25:34 - Peggy George
when you can show actual artifacts and student products the story speaks for itself!

25:38 - Kim Caise
it was going to cost like $60K

25:48 - Cindy Medeiros
I was planning to create a visual like that chart. Thanks, Holly!

25:48 - bethstill

25:59 - Aunttammie
Hoping to get more info at site

26:10 - Aunttammie
A iste

26:16 - Kim Caise
not sure if that was for infrastructure costs or what

26:18 - Wes Fryer
Email archiving for Google Apps can cost $$$

26:27 - Maureen
Seriously Kim it is free. I paid 100 to a guy to do our email move over cuz I was scared

26:28 - Susie @shighley
I know that teacher emails have to be archived as public records, and that's one of the areas where we have to pay google

26:29 - Peggy George
so many great uses of Google apps!!!

26:43 - Tom Daccord
@kimcaise It is free, but schools sometimes incur costs synching with existing platforms and upping Drive flexibility.

26:55 - Kim Caise
that could be it wes because texas requires all school email be archived for 5 years

26:58 - Peggy George
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/notability-take-notes-annotate/id360593530?mt=8 (Notability app)

27:25 - Tom Daccord
@kimcaise Yes, archiving costs money.

29:12 - Maureen

29:22 - Peggy George
I'd love to have others share their digital portfolio examples here in the chat and I'll add them to the Livebinder :-)

29:23 - Kim Caise
i just checked with my hubby and it was for upgrading servers for the storage and archiving capabilities, not for the actual GAFE

VoiceThread as Eportfolios https://sites.google.com/site/dl2013eportfolio/voicethread-as-eportfolios

30:39 - Peggy George
if we dig into our attics and storage rooms we MIGHT find a yellowed example of something we wrote back in 4th grade but who gets to see it???? :-)

30:48 - Michelle @cordym
In our board we call this pedagogical documentation and it's the heart of our Kindy programming and assessment. Great stuff.

31:31 - Peggy George
what a great tip about the graduation gift!!!

31:39 - Kim Caise
go daddy was having a domain sale for .99 recently

32:06 - jackiegerstein
Jim Groom highly promotes owning your own domain - http://bavatuesdays.com/a-domain-of-ones-own/ uses it with his college students

32:14 - Peggy George
and once you purchase your domain name it's yours for life, right????

32:20 - Debbie Boatwright
HELP pc not one to one..

32:39 - Joan Young (flourishingkids)
So.. are these google site portfolio easy to transfer from a school gmail acct to a personal?

32:47 - @wilsandrea
@Peggy - yes, but I think you have to pay for it each year, right?

32:56 - Kim Caise
no, it is only yours as long as you pay each year and renew the domain

32:56 - Peggy George
I don't think so...

33:03 - Lorie Moffat
There's usually a small annual fee for a domain name.

33:06 - Cindy Medeiros
I am doing a Scratch workshop in which they suggested we use Google presentation for our design notebook

33:09 - JoAnn Clemens
If your tech director is anti google do you have a few other options?

33:26 - jackiegerstein
I actually promote Weebly with my college students for their course projects - they love it

33:30 - bethstill
@JoAnn--Get a new tech! ;)

33:31 - Kim Caise
if yo don't renew it is released and can go back out for anyone to purchase it

33:39 - Peggy George
thanks for asking your questions here in the chat! Kim and Lorie will get on the mic for Q/A and ask them for you

33:56 - Cindy Medeiros
SO TRUE!

34:00 - Wes Fryer
Interesting issues are raised when parents choose to make a digital footprint for their children. Student choice is important to respect

34:01 - @shamblesguru [macbook] thai
The company I use to purchase and manage domain names is https://www.domaindiscover.com/

34:04 - Peggy George
hahaha @bethstill!!! but we need their support!

34:13 - SEMSLibraryLady
recommendations for design principle books/websites?

34:14 - Kathy Cassidy
My students use blogs as our digital portfolios. I love that the posts are all dated so you can see the progress over time. http://mscassidysclass.edublogs.org/

34:15 - kagreen
This is great.

34:16 - Michelle @cordym
Hi Holly! You are giving so much information!

34:22 - Peggy George
get your smartphone out!!! scan that QR code

34:26 - bethstill
@JoAnn--serious answer. Get your admin on your side. They can usually persuade the techs to do what is best for the students.

34:40 - Peggy George
any of you can raise your hand to take the mic :-)

34:46 - Joan Young (flourishingkids)
Thanks for the info.. gotta run in a minute.. .appreciate the expertise shared here

34:56 - Peggy George
so glad you could be here Joan!

35:00 - Kim Caise

35:13 - Kathy Cassidy
There are other options for young children as well. Check the "hosts" page here.

35:31 - Peggy George
when you can share real examples of the power of google apps it can be very persuasive!

35:48 - Peggy George
@Kathy--can you take the mic to talk about some of those options?

36:27 - Kathy Cassidy
I could, Peggy. I'd rather Holly answered questions first. It's her day and she's doing so well.

36:30 - Cindy Medeiros
You can use the + option on gmail too

36:39 - Peggy George
If any of you would like to take the mic to share with us please raise your hand and we'll give you audio permission :-)

36:43 - SEMSLibraryLady
Our district just went with Google Apps, but block us from using email addresses for students! :(

teachers are close to the blockbuster stage in my community and I am an "outsider" how can I start by just importance to educate the entire community?

37:12 - Jan Wells
with Weebly in the primary, can their account go on with them each to each grade?

37:16 - Debbie Boatwright
? I thought google apps for ed was free

37:17 - Tom Daccord
@joannclemens Some IT directors are anti-Google because they don't want to synch Drive with existing "active directory" accounts which can require many hours and involve complications. Frankly, it hurts teachers if they don't.

37:19 - Carolyn Stanley
I do have a general question about Google Hangouts - can they be private? or must they be recorded and public?

37:30 - SEMSLibraryLady
???Recommendations for design books/websites? How to train students if you're not great at design yourself??

37:39 - Debbie Boatwright
Also what about PC not one to one schools? Best blog to use for students?

37:50 - Lisa Dennison
how to start from scratch

37:58 - Melissa
@Holly Clark You mentioned your students use iPads. Can they create google sites from the iPad?

37:58 - Peggy George
great questions!!! keep them coming :-)

38:04 - @beckitharp

kidblog is good for young students

38:20 - @wilsandrea
kidblog is great!

38:30 - Tom Daccord
ditto, kidblog

38:31 - sarahjane
we are not one to one and we manage these blogs and they are envolving into portfolio http://kidblog.org/MrsSoltau-Heller2012-2013/

38:37 - Maureen
@tomdaccord but you don't have to sync with AD... It would be nice, but not necessary

38:41 - Kim Caise
using google apps for ed is free, it is the archival and storage portion that is not free

38:41 - Kathy Cassidy
Debbie, for young children, I like Edublogs or Kidblog.

38:47 - Debbie Boatwright
Share it please??

@SEMSLibraryLady - Robin Williams - The Non-Designers Design Handbook - not sure if that is the exact title but something like that.

38:58 - sarahjane
not sure what to do ith them at the end of the year? Hve had some kids for 2 yrs.

39:00 - jackiegerstein
Wordpress can be an option for older kids - they now have a classroom version http://en.wordpress.com/classrooms/

39:16 - Susie @shighley
I think we need to show them examples. Show them that other schools are dong the things you want to do already

39:19 - Kathy Cassidy
My students portfolios are all linked on the side of this http://mscassidysclass.edublogs.org/

39:23 - Kim Caise
if you get a teacher's account with weebly you can have i think up to 50 student accounts and it costs about $40 a year

39:46 - Susie @shighley
One of the things admins don't want is to be behind others

39:47 - jackiegerstein
That's like the pressure I got to teach keyboarding when I taught tech - both from the teachers and the parents

Thanks, Carolyn!

Here is an example of KidBlog as first grade digital portfolios. http://kidblog.org/MsLirenmansClass2012/

39:54 - @beckitharp
We have used kidblogs this year, but I am struggling with what to do with them now that the kids are moving on to classrooms where they don't do digital portfolios. My kids are worried about how to keep blogging!

39:56 - Lisa Dennison
this is exactly what I need

40:00 - Peggy George
this is such great advice from Holly!!!!!

40:08 - Lisa Dennison
motivational!

40:10 - shukufa
hi all

40:22 - shukufa
great to join this event

40:23 - Peggy George
welcome shukufa!

40:26 - Cindy Medeiros
I am using Edublogs with my HS students. It is a bit confusing at first, but it is nice that it includes wikis and pages as well as blog posts

40:30 - Lisa Dennison
the parents need digital citizenship

40:33 - Debbie Boatwright
Holly is 7th grade?

40:36 - SEMSLibraryLady
My parents are with me, it's the admin that resists:(

40:40 - shukufa
thanks Peggy

40:48 - shukufa
how are you

40:49 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
...and I'm back. Just finished GHO with educators at the Chicago Public Library.

40:55 - Carolyn Stanley
I have heard folks complaining about kids not knowing how to sign their names in cursive. I was never good, myself, at cursive writing, but I DO believe kids should know the difference between a printed signature and a cursive - of course, I don't know what doctors use.

41:03 - Pat Judd
Parent support is so important.

41:06 - ERICA JORDAN from Houston, TX
wow

41:08 - Peggy George
I think they are more accountable when they use their own avatars/names.

41:47 - dpaitsel@access.k12.wv.us
I teach 11th and 12th graders. Seniors currently leave with a printed portfolio in a binder. Would these apps be appropriate for their grade level.

41:47 - Kathy Cassidy
@beckitharp That is an issue with Kidblog I think. I do know that they are trying to improve it all the time. With Edublogs, I have the option of giving the parents the moderation or transferring it to another teacher, or orphaning the blog.

41:51 - Pat Judd
Parent information sessions-excellent!

41:52 - Debbie Boatwright
Holly:Would you do one here as a demo?

41:54 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Yes, they can be private.

41:54 - SEMSLibraryLady
eye-opening to look at MS students' Instagram accts. They had no idea I could see what they post

42:21 - bethstill
Hi Kyle!

42:26 - Kim Caise
debbie, are you referring to a google handout right now?

42:37 - Kyle Pace
Howdy!

42:42 - Kim Caise
hi kyle

42:50 - sarahjane
we have team taught using google hangouts

42:54 - Debbie Boatwright
@kim I would love more info re: google hangouts..

42:58 - @wilsandrea
Thanks for the great session, everyone - gotta run! Hope to connect again! https://twitter.com/wilsandrea

43:07 - Carolyn Stanley
I really want to learn more about Google hangouts. I still don't really understand them.

43:10 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
You have the option of doing your GHO Live On Air or not. If you choose not to do On Air then it is private to those you share GHO link with.

43:18 - Carolyn Stanley
Thanks, Holly!

44:19 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Hi Jan Wells and Kyle Pace. See you soon in San Antonio. :)

44:21 - @beckitharp
@Kathy - thank you! New project for me then - moving their work over to edublogs! I have my kids for 3 years so they are really worried about losing all their work.

45:52 - Tom Daccord

46:33 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
@caroly Let's do a GHO and I can help yoiu learn it hands-on.

46:42 - Stella Maris Berdaxagar ( Argentina)
I use wordpress as a blog with rss feed to Edmodo.

46:57 - Debbie Boatwright
What is the cost for edublog and or kidblog?

47:03 - sarahjane
kidblog is free

47:04 - @beckitharp
@Kathy and @Karen inspired me to start blogging with my special ed kids and we have never looked back! Thank you!

47:11 - sarahjane
edublog costs

47:14 - Wes Fryer #3
Holly: How do you reassure scared parents that it can be ok for students to post with their real names?

47:22 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Kidblog is free. That is the platform I use.

47:23 - Kyle Pace
Edublog premium has a cost

47:58 - Kathy Cassidy
Kidblog is free. There is a free version of Edublogs, but I pay $39 per year for the pro version because you have so much more space to upload artifacts.

47:58 - Carolyn Stanley
@pnaugle - great, Paula - maybe later this evening. I'll try to contact you via twitter later.

47:59 - BJ Shackleford
Blogger is awesome to use. I can show students when they are graded and not graded as wellas when they turned an assignment in. It is alos nice for parents to know when all assignments are assigned online

48:01 - Jan Wells
@plnaugle I'd like to join you too for GHO beginners

48:24 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
@carolyn Yes, can do before 7:30 CDT.

48:42 - Toni
How do you keep kids from using the iPad pass code to lock other classes out of the iPad?

48:44 - Michelle @cordym
Zen what now? I missed the name of the tool she is referring to.

48:48 - Carolyn Stanley

@BJ Shackleford I need help with settings for a 4th grade teacher to use blogger with students that do not have email accounts.

48:58 - Carolyn Stanley

49:04 - Kathy Cassidy
@beckitharp I think you should check about what can happen with Kidblog before you do that work of moving them over. I thought I had heard that was changing for them.

Please share parent meeting information for digital citizenship.

50:13 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
@Carolyn and @Jan Wells What about 5 pm CDT (6EDT) today?

50:13 - Carolyn Stanley
@Holly - I once saw a graphic where every option for Microsoft Word was open, and there was no room to compose.

50:17 - Michelle @cordym
Holly, can you share a link for a good starting point with Presentation Zen?

50:20 - SEMSLibraryLady
I think a design class would be good for a lot of us--I see teachers packing text onto presentations, then reading from the slide.

50:27 - Michelle @cordym
Seems like a state of mind and not a web 2.0 tool, right?

50:40 - Peggy George
I'll add all of the links you're sharing in the chat to the Livebinder after the show: http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=894102

50:52 - @beckitharp
@Kathy, Thank you. I started with an edublog, but kidblog was a little easier for my kids, but I want them to be able to have the option to keep them when they leave me.

52:28 - Debbie Boatwright
@ BJ Shackleford the teacher just wants them to post without logging in so no email address

53:13 - Peggy George
if you have school issues with online blogging you can always start by using paper blogging ala McTeach :-)

53:18 - Lisa Dennison
my email is ldenniso@access.k12.wv.us

53:43 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
@Debbie Boatwright I would suggest that BJ use kidblog for her 4th graders. No email requried. Can be as closed or open as you want them to be.

53:48 - Peggy George

53:50 - Lisa Dennison
i would appreciate any info you shared on the parent meetings

53:58 - Kim Caise
dean mantz does great things with portfolios using livebinders

54:07 - BJ Shackleford
You could assign one or a couple of emaila ddress that the teacher controls and when the student add the blogg they sign their name to it lthough you might run into trouble with ownership where students assign other students name

54:09 - Michelle @cordym
Big fan of getting your head out of your apps! #onescreen zen

54:11 - Kathy Cassidy
Good idea!

54:13 - jackiegerstein
Good idea - think about how many apps you use on a regular basis

56:02 - Kyle Pace
