Very interesting in Socrative

06:14 - shukufa

09:02 - Lesa #2
Increased student engagement

09:19 - Peggy George
so many options for going paperless!

09:20 - Eileen K
I'm excited and ready:)

10:23 - Lisa Durff
must step away a moment

10:52 - Peggy George
love the term seamless--it definitely is

11:01 - Dotty
You can do data analysis easier.

11:40 - Peggy George
yes the instant results are such a big help and being able to sort them in different ways is so helpful

11:56 - @bcdtech Maureen
Hi there Paula! Taking a break from writing comments... 29 down... 75 to go

12:08 - Peggy George
wow! so many great reasons to use online assessments!

12:18 - Alison Keene
That is fantastic!

12:34 - Alison Keene
HOw do you deal with having enough computers for kids to use?

12:36 - Peggy George
so glad Cat is going to share all of the ways she does this!!!

12:44 - Greg Macer
you don't have to spend hours trying to figure out their handwriting!

12:50 - Eileen K
Amazing, but what about elementary students who do not have email accounts.

12:57 - Dotty
I do reading quizzes and running records online. Gives me information on skills I need to address.

12:58 - Peggy George
Thanks for your question Alison. We'll save all of the questions to ask after her presentation

13:22 - Peggy George
if any of you have questions just type them in the chat and we'll ask them after Cat finishes her presentation

13:25 - Kim Caise
excited to see the online options available!

13:30 - Peggy George (Cat Flippen on Twitter)

13:45 - Peggy George (Cat Flippen’ blog)

14:02 - Peggy George
that's a big school!!! 4000 kids!

14:12 - Parvana
Hello from sunny Azerbaijan

14:21 - Peggy George
that would be fantastic to have a gamification presentation!!!!

14:40 - Peggy George (EdTech Evangelist created by Cat Flippens “rom virtual worlds to mobile learning to gamification, sharing the "good news" of Educational Technology”

14:44 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
This week my 4th graders watched a BrainPOP video, took the graded quiz and emailed me the results without them needing email addresses. Great feature within BP.

14:55 - Parvana
hi dear Shukufa

15:02 - Peggy George
that's a fantastic feature of BrainPop!

15:06 - shukufa
hi Peri

15:13 - Parvana

15:32 - shukufa
that is very interesting for us

15:53 - Peggy George
anyone thinking that???? one more thing to do????

16:29 - Dotty
Loved using Brainpop when a classroom teacher

16:33 - Alison Keene
That's my issue right now...teach 7th grade science

17:17 - Kim Caise
can be so overwhelming!

17:20 - Peggy George
teachers spend so many hours grading student work!!

17:48 - shukufa
can i have this presentation

17:49 - Dotty
Online is great when I had to update IEP's

17:54 - Peggy George
and it's so easy to modify it later if you need to

17:55 - Alison Keene

18:04 - Peggy George
good point @Dotty!!!

18:11 - Alison Keene
That's true for me, but I had to "find" the paper every year.

18:19 - Peggy George
love the term "free(ish)" :-)

18:30 - Alison Keene

18:40 - Peggy George
many tools are free but come with more features if you pay for the premium version

19:16 - Peggy George
that would be great to have a list of peer-reviewed research on online assessment! Thanks Cat!

19:34 - Dotty
Online data allows me to compare and chart progress easier.

19:34 - Zack
I agree that would be helpful to have some research

19:46 - Peggy George
she will be showing us examples of all of these tools she is mentioning

20:11 - Peggy George
great image!! makes you feel like your head is spinning :-)

20:29 - Lesa #2
Cat...I am a bit concerned about the message about grading. The most important part of formative assessment analyzing student work to inform instruction. Perhaps at the end you can address this more.

20:42 - Peggy George
I can't imagine doing a doctorate, working full time with a 14 month old!

20:44 - Kim Caise
we will post the recording and resources on our website after the show this weekend at

20:44 - Larry A 1
You can use data to see how each student is doing, where any one student or lots of students are stuck or not getting it and to adjust your teaching of those ideas and concepts so they understand them better - leave fewer or no gaps of knowledge

20:48 - Lisa Durff
downtime - what's that?

20:52 - Peggy George
no worries Cat

20:55 - Peggy George
we'll come back to it

21:34 - Lesa #2
Does all formative assessment need to be "graded"?

21:36 - Peggy George
we'll save all of your questions and ask them when Cat finishes her presentation. We don't want her to run out of time sharing her tips/tools.

22:28 - Peggy George

23:10 - Peggy George
love the scrambled question possibility with Quia

23:20 - dabambic
I use

23:21 - Peggy George
I think the subscription is $49. a year now

23:37 - Peggy George
but the additional features are amazing!

23:49 - Patti R
I used to pay for Quia out of pocket when I taught Spanish k-8, I felt it was worth it, great platform

23:54 - Peggy George
get ready!!! play with us

23:56 - Zack
That is still really reasonable for a year.

24:03 - Lisa Durff
i flunk

24:13 - Cat Flippen (@CatFlippen) 1

24:50 - Peggy George
go to that link, pick a name and take the quiz

25:27 - Peggy George
can't listen to the audio in the quiz if you keep talking Cat :-)

26:14 - Peggy George
I love this activity!

26:30 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Link is not working for me.

26:59 - Cindy
have you found Quia to be more useful than an online textbook with these features - classes, testing, etc.

27:01 - Peggy George
it worked for me--you have to click on the audio player to listen to the questions before you can answer them

27:15 - Peggy George
we'll have to do it later so we can hear Cat speaking right now

27:45 - @SteveHayes_RB60
great website

28:08 - Alison Keene
OMG, that sounds like my class, very often..

28:21 - Alison Keene
love the survey idea

28:36 - Peggy George
surveys are really easy to set up on Google forms--even on the fly :-)

29:11 - Peggy George
make sure "scale to fit" is checked in the menu at the top of the whiteboard. Then you can see her full screen without scrolling

29:27 - @bcdtech Maureen
Is the little bits of html we see generated or user input?

29:27 - @SteveHayes_RB60
just tried the quia test on my iphone - worked well!

29:31 - Peggy George
so many great options with Quia!

29:32 - Lorie Moffat
except not pop-up windows during app share

29:39 - Peggy George
that's great news @Steve!

29:44 - Jeanie from NYC/
how did you do pictures?

29:44 - Zack
Google even has some great scripts that even email students feedback immediately

29:46 - @SteveHayes_RB60

29:55 - Kim Caise
that is awesome Steve - thanks for mentioning that

30:24 - Peggy George
I'll bet the students LOVE this class!

30:39 - ljubica

30:51 - Peggy George

30:58 - stidmama
sorry I can't stay to hear the rest, this is wonderful, and I can hardly wait to watch the recording.

30:59 - Peggy George
edmodo is totally free :-)

31:07 - Peggy George
thanks for coming @stidmama!

31:35 - J Frank 1
Free for now.

31:40 - Peggy George
the discussion in Edmodo is invaluable along with the assessments

31:59 - Lisa Durff
some iPads joined today

32:20 - Lisa Durff
and some phones too

32:39 - Peggy George
Yes Edmodo has a new format now-you can choose if you want to use the new or stay with the old :-)

32:45 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Jeff O'Hara, a co-creator of Edmodo, promises it will alwyas be free. My 4th graders love using Edmodo as our learning management system.

32:54 - Becki
My students love edmodo I have found that they are writing more!

33:13 - Peggy George

33:25 - Patti R
Discovery Builder Tools are awesome

33:27 - Eileen K
Love DE !

33:33 - Peggy George
many free resources on Discovery Ed but many of them require a paid subscription

33:34 - Lisa Durff
PA has discovery education videos free to all schools in PA

33:46 - Peggy George
your school or district needs to subscribe to the paid version

33:47 - Alison Keene
DE has fantastic resources...AZ dropped paying for all teachers, sadly

33:53 - shukufa
that is interesting link

33:57 - shukufa

34:03 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Become a DEN Star. Lots of great resources are shared by the community members.

34:09 - Peggy George
that was a sad day for us in AZ @Alison!! :-(

34:19 - Becki
We don't have it yet:( but I'm trying!

34:21 - Zack
Can you build the questions into the videos or do they have to be at the end?

34:23 - shukufa
we can do ourselves yes?

34:24 - Lisa Durff
if you are a PA teacher without this - contact your IU

34:38 - Alison Keene
Easy to use and there is help from DE

34:46 - Patti R
@Durff, I thought it was Safari Montage that PA had for free

34:47 - @bcdtech Maureen
We don't have it- too $$ for small independent school

34:55 - Peggy George

35:06 - Lisa Durff
I don't think so Patti but maybe

35:15 - Lisa Durff
been out of classroom a while

35:31 - Peggy George
that link goes to a schooltube video for how to create a quiz on Discovery Ed

35:37 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
There was quite an uproar at the beginning of our school year, because our district ddn't fund our Discovery Ed subscription. So mnay teachers complained that the district paid for the service and got it back for us.

35:53 - Peggy George
that is great news Paula!!! So glad they listened!

36:11 - Peggy George

36:13 - Kim Caise
awesome that your teachers have that much influence and respect

36:26 - @bcdtech Maureen
If you know how to do IF statements in Excel- same sort of thing

36:27 - Lisa Durff
(time for more pizza - quietly sneaks out)

36:36 - Dotty
Love discovery ed

36:53 - Peggy George (Try Flubaroo Now: Copyable spreadsheet)

37:02 - Leigh Smith 1
I love Socrative!

37:11 - Peggy George (Socrative home page)

37:26 - Zack
How do you utilize google forms when you are having students submit answers for upper level math problems without doing multiple choice

37:27 - dabambic
Socrative is very good for immediate student responses.

37:32 - Peggy George

37:47 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
How to make self-graded quizzes in Google Drive

38:00 - Peggy George
She'll tell us what to do with the student code in a minute

38:19 - Peggy George
Free!!!! :-)

38:26 - Karima Mann
Students love Socrative's Space Race

38:28 - Becki
I like Socrative, but haven't been able to use it as much as possible due to the lack of technology in the room.

38:49 - Cat Flippen (@CatFlippen) 1

38:50 - Peggy George
there is always setup time but after the first time it's easy!

38:52 - Peggy George

38:54 - Zack
Thanks Paula!

38:58 - Cat Flippen (@CatFlippen) 1

39:08 - Cat Flippen (@CatFlippen) 1

39:51 - Peggy George
you can even join that room using the Livebinder link :-)

40:40 - Kim Caise
i thought we did a show that mentioned socrative in the past

41:18 - Peggy George
this is so exciting!

41:25 - Peggy George
have you been able to submit your answers?

41:34 - Peggy George
I'm feeling so smart :-)

42:23 - Peggy George
that's great that students can share devices on Socrative!

42:46 - Becki
Oh, I didn't know that they could share! That will really help me! Thank you.;)

43:20 - Zack
That will help with schools struggling with device access

43:30 - Peggy George
exit tickets are such a great way to do a quick check on what students learned during the lesson :-)

43:46 - Doug Henry
Good for BYOD...

43:56 - Zack
Elementary schools you could set this up as a station to get formative data on a lesson

44:07 - Cindy
Does it support unicode characters so it could be used in world languages classes?

44:14 - Peggy George

44:16 - kg
Zoho Challenge is GREAT but disappears at the end of December :(

44:22 - Dotty
I used quiz star in the past, but there is a charge now

44:23 - Peggy George

44:24 - Lisa Durff
I have used NoteStar

44:42 - Zack
Nearpod also allows you deliver content too!

44:53 - Zack
websites, activities, etc

44:57 - dabambic
I use quizstar

45:04 - Peggy George

45:18 - Zack
Helping ELL teachers use Nearpod in a small group

45:24 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
If I had iPads I would edefinitely use NearPod to control their pacing through a lesson.

45:41 - Annette Whitby
So much fun learning from you all!

45:46 - Peggy George

46:14 - Peggy George

46:27 - dabambic
My students LOVE quizlet!

46:28 - Peggy George
Quizlet has so much and it is all free!

46:41 - kg
Of all of these, which have the most potential for multiple authors working to build an assessment (e.g., a team of students doing it to quiz others)?

46:48 - Candice
? For end...

46:48 - Peggy George (Quizlet: Not just flashcards, two great review games, practice test feature, powerful verbal practice integrator, also can include audio, video, pictures)

46:52 - Peggy Tiani
Do any of the online quiz options allow a student to review their answers and 'check over' their quiz?

47:01 - @SteveHayes_RB60
study blue

47:07 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Jeopardy Labs allows you to build Jeopardy games for free Great for reviewing concepts with whole class.

47:31 - radney
How do these tools compare with the quiz feature on Moodle?

47:35 - Peggy George (WordChamp: Ideally for Foreign Language teachers, great for dual language translation activities, repetitive verb conjugation practice, integrated Web Reader translation assistance (word-by-word scroll over)

48:15 - Peggy George
great point about embedding these tools on your website or Moodle site!

48:16 - Peggy Tiani
thanks for the jeopardy lab link :)

48:21 - Zack
I agree with the Moodle comments!

48:31 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
For math teachers check out TenMarks. It is free for teachers and allows you to assign Common Core aligned tests to your students and gives you reports.

48:35 - kg
VT rocks :)

48:44 - Peggy George

48:49 - Zack
How much is VT now?

48:53 - aimeevt #2
I love that idea!

48:56 - Candice
? for the end... Seem times I can feel overwhelmed by all of the great options that are available and don't use any of them well... If you had to suggest just one to start with, which would be the best tool at has the most capabilities? Where is a good place to start?

48:56 - Peggy George (More than just project narration! Collaborative work and assessments, shareable with other students only option, additional approach to written and presented material)

49:08 - Peggy George (Education version of VoiceThread-Single educator license: $49/year)

49:12 - @bcdtech Maureen
VT got really pricey this year for a school acct.

49:23 - Peggy George
I agree Maureen!

49:55 - Zack is another great site to allow students to leave comments on pdf's or linoit-leaving sticky notes on a video

50:02 - Peggy George
I think I was mixing up the prices for Quia and Voicethread. Quia is $40/year I think if you want the Pro version.

50:03 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Hate that VT and Glogster went to paid version for classroom use. Loved both of them but can't afford to spend money of these sites.

50:14 - kg
Question for the end: Of all of these, which have the most potential for multiple authors working to build an assessment (e.g., a team of students building their own quiz for other students to use)?

50:20 - Peggy George

50:27 - Peggy George
thanks for that link @Zack!!!

50:37 - Lisa Durff
I want the coffee badge

50:39 - Patti R
photopeach has a quiz feature also

51:00 - Zack is another one I just found yesterday to-great formative tool via sticky notes

51:12 - Peggy George (VoiceThread app for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) (3D GameLab (Guildsite): For mastery-based learning, quest-based learning, learning badges and gamification of class elements)

51:37 - Lisa Durff
i would have my laptop on a table and spend very little time at it

51:42 - kg
Crocodoc is a great collaborative document-building/reflection piece...

51:47 - Peggy George
today we call "cheating" collaboration! We want them to help each other learn :-)

51:53 - Lisa Durff
always walking around

51:58 - @bcdtech Maureen
@Paula- I don't mind paying for stuff- don

51:59 - Zack
Love it Peggy!

52:03 - Lisa Durff
intellectual honesty policy?

52:05 - @SteveHayes_RB60
If you're interested in BYOT/BYOD - #BYOTchat on Twitter - every Thursday 9pm EST more info at

52:08 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
@Zack, I love using Google Drive for collaobative creation, but hard to use with 4th graders if they don't have gmial accounts. We have done some work using my gmail account.

52:29 - Zack
Paula-do you share the link with them?

52:31 - @SteveHayes_RB60

52:42 - Kim Caise

52:50 - kg
@Plnaugle...sidebar...loved your election assignment, and used it last week with my college students :)

52:52 - @bcdtech Maureen
@PAula Sorry, that escaped. I don't think that FREE is a good business model. I would like them to make it workable for all of us

53:04 - Zack
This bypassess having them signing in. We have done many google presentations this way

53:21 - Peggy George
woo hoo!!!!! door prize!!!!!!

53:26 - Lisa Durff
as opposed to a fake teacher

53:30 - Eileen K

53:36 - Peggy George
get ready to add your answer!

53:44 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
@Zack, no I log in on a couple of computers and bring up the form they are to work on together.

53:47 - @SteveHayes_RB60
room number

53:50 - Lisa Durff
I will stay out since I don't have a class

53:56 - Kim Caise
same here lisa

53:57 - aimeevt #2
room number?

54:04 - Cat Flippen (@CatFlippen) 1

54:05 - Peggy George

54:09 - Kim Caise

54:21 - Kim Caise

54:32 - @SteveHayes_RB60
email too?

54:57 - Peggy George
what fun!!!!

55:03 - kg
very cool way to intro quick quizzes ;)

55:09 - Peggy George
sign out when you finish so someone else can join :-)

55:11 - Zack
Paula-you can share the link and students then don't need an email to sign in-love it because we can't get emails for kids

55:14 - @SteveHayes_RB60
Thanks Cat - You're doing Great!

55:22 - Zack
Agreed Steve!

55:32 - Annette Whitby
Will spend my Saturday reviewing all of this GREAT info.

56:21 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
@Zack, yes that is how I work around them not having emails. I can also embed GDoc in Edmodo for them to access without emails.

56:36 - Zack
Great idea!

56:57 - Peggy George

57:04 - kg
Do you need to get approval from your district to run your action research?

57:04 - Peggy George
Action Research link

57:22 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
@Zack, check out the surveys and spreadsheets they created (using my acct)

57:31 - Peggy George
Slideshare for Action Research project:

57:58 - Parvana

58:07 - Eileen K
This is wonderful information!

58:27 - @SteveHayes_RB60
Struggling convincing teachers at my school that they don't need to have a printed copy to grade.

58:34 - Kim Caise
that would be interesting to know

58:35 - Peggy George
we will keep going but if you need to leave the recording will be posted as soon as the session is over.

58:51 - Zack
Paula-Those are great and I bet they allow you to do some authentic math work with your data

59:06 - Peggy George
awesome results!!!

59:18 - Peggy George
we can officially close the webinar and then continue with questions

59:19 - Zack
That is convincing data!

59:28 - Bill
Any tools you know of for assessing online with rubrics?

59:36 - Zack

59:39 - Lisa Durff
time to virtually applaud for Cat!

59:40 - dabambic
This has been wonderful. Thanks.

Rubistar is for creating them, but not using them in the assessment process.

1:05:59 - Peggy George
use the survey link to request a certificate

1:06:07 - Peggy George

1:06:43 - Lesa #2
I do not feel that feedback is the same as grading.

1:06:54 - Peggy George
Thank you all for joining us today!!!

1:07:04 - Bill
What is the livebinder link?

1:07:26 - Peggy George

1:07:31 - Bill

1:07:43 - Peggy George
all of the Classroom 2.0 LIVE links are also in a separate tab on the Livebinder

1:08:03 - Peggy George
so if you want to watch a recorded session and request a PD certificate you can submit that survey any time

1:08:15 - Peggy George
Quia really is so comprehensive!

1:08:27 - Cindy
Thanks - we also use Realidades, and have found it a bit clunky, too.

1:08:31 - aimeevt #2
Lots of tools (google forms) offer graphs and charts of results-teachers can quickly check class understanding and plan next steps . . . no grading

1:08:38 - Peggy George
it was the pictures on Quia

1:09:13 - Peggy George
feel free to take us back to app sharing if you want Cat :-)

1:09:14 - @SteveHayes_RB60
Can you add images to google forms?

1:09:33 - Sue Ann Miller 1
If you have windows 7 - use "Snipping tool"

1:09:33 - Peggy George
no I don't think so Steve

1:09:58 - Candice
? for the end... Seem times I can feel overwhelmed by all of the great options that are available and don't use any of them well... If you had to suggest just one to start with, which would be the best tool at has the most capabilities? Where is a good place to start?

1:10:03 - Peggy George
you'd have to give them a link to audio or image and take them away from the form. Not the best!!

1:10:20 - Cindy
If you have OneNote, try the Windows button + S key for snipping!

1:10:21 - Peggy George
Great question @Candice!

1:10:39 - Candice
Sorry for the typos!

1:11:18 - Peggy George
I guess some of it depends on what's really important to you. If you want it ALL you may need to subscribe to one of the Pro versions

1:12:11 - kg
Thanks for that answer on collaboration :)

1:12:21 - Peggy George
really helpful answer Cat!!! :-)

1:13:00 - @SteveHayes_RB60
you can create polls in sliderocket which has a collabortive capabilities

1:13:06 - Candice
Remind me again, which one works across all types of technology?

1:13:12 - Cindy
Thanks, all - great session - LOTS to ponder here.

1:13:18 - Lorie Moffat

1:13:24 - Peggy George
one more from Candice :-)

1:13:28 - Becki
Candice, that

1:13:30 - Bill
Wondering if you know of any online rubric tools where when you grade with the rubric, students can access the results?

1:13:46 - Becki
that's Socrative Candice

1:13:51 - Peggy George
with Google Forms you can publish the URL for the results spreadsheet

1:14:06 - Peggy George
not sure about rubrics results @Bill???

1:14:12 - Candice
Awesome! Thank you!!! This has been great!

1:14:27 - Bill
Google Forms is hard to format so it looks nice. Also there's a need to keep individual assessment results private.

1:14:48 - @bcdtech Maureen
Thank you - learned a lot.

1:15:00 - Peggy George
that's so true Bill! You can't just share one student's results on Google

1:15:01 - Lesa #2
Thank you. Interesting session

1:15:02 - kg
GoogleForms really requires extra work, like using Flubaroo for grading, and having a place to post it (unlike the self-contained environments like Edmodo).

1:15:26 - Peggy George
Flubaroo is a fantastic time saving option for teachers and you don't have to know how to create it. Just use their template

1:15:29 - kg
@Bill: Yes, grade sharing with Forms is another step to do

1:15:42 - kg
It was so great when Flubaroo hit the streets :)

1:16:01 - Bill
I like Flubaroo, but it's not a solution for rubric-based grading.

1:16:50 - Peggy George
it's really interesting to see some of the sample assessments coming out for Common Core now. I've been impressed with some of the multiple choice options that require deep thinking and they have to solve multiple steps to get the correct answer

1:17:16 - kg
Googleforms can allow "text" responses if you choose that item option, but formatting is not kind.

1:17:20 - Peggy George

1:18:11 - Kim Caise

1:18:28 - Peggy George
I was in a LearnZillion webinar last week where they demonstrated a couple of examples for the common core assessments and was very impressed! They have free webinars almost weekly and LearnZillion is an amazing free resource for CommonCore!

1:18:36 - Bill
Not that it necessarily grades it for you, but that you can use while viewing a project online to grade, and then the score can be accessed by the student.

1:18:59 - Peggy George
Kathy Schrock has tons of links for rubrics on her site but I'm not sure any of them publish the results.

1:19:13 - Peggy George

1:19:15 - Kim Caise

1:19:21 - Bill
But the student needs to be able to access the assessment results individually and see the rubric criteria.

1:19:29 - kg
I have used forms to score my own rubrics...clunky workaround.

1:19:38 - Peggy George
MathType is very expensive :-(

1:20:02 - kg
Right, and then set up a different form for each assignment.

1:20:20 - Bill
Only if you use Moodle or Blackboard - Rubistar.

1:20:21 - Peggy George
maybe one of you can create a rubric that does that :-) and come back and do an entire show on it :-)

1:20:31 - kg
yes, that would be a great topic

1:20:40 - Peggy George
love it Cat!!!!

1:20:42 - kg are super :)

1:20:54 - Sue Ann Miller 1
Great info!

1:20:55 - kg
Let Cat go play with rubrics and come back.

1:20:56 - Bill
