@strassm. It does and they resist it. The model has always been that the answers come from the teacher not the students. By the end of a course, they do seem to be more comfortable with it though.

@Jon - when I plan bigger projects I have "check in" points every so often when students are told something is "due." For younger adolescents this has been a way to help them learn to plan and prioritize work loads, and keeps them on track to be finished. Stacked Oreos to find class average, rolled them down different ramps to see how far they'd travel, used a timer to see who could lick icing off the fastest, and used them on balance scales to compare other items.
