18:25 - @shamblesguru
I wonder what the actua percentage is ... is it really low ... USA teachers in Social media?
18:38 - SusanSi
thank u
18:39 - Peggy George
great question @shamblesguru
18:41 - Tracy Brady
I've heard really low percentages...like 2%
18:50 - stidmama
in many places, social media is actively discouraged
18:58 - Peggy George
http://www.youtube.com/user/DiscoveryEducation (Discovery Education YouTubeChannel)
18:59 - Susie Highley @shighley
and the livebinder so people will have one place to get all the links from today
19:07 - Tracy Brady
I've tried to share with 3 of my admins so far to no avail
19:07 - Jan Robertson
2% is mind boggling to me.
19:12 - SusanSi
I love having the recordings
19:15 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Definitely become a STAR. The DEN is another great way to add to your PLN.
19:28 - Peggy George
We also post this chat log in our blog post along with the recordings so you can go back and
read it later if you like--great way to find links shared during the session
19:46 - SusanSi
I did the same-21 years and taught mine at home!
19:53 - Tracy Brady
that would be very helpful, Peggy
20:09 - Peggy George
http://livebinders.com/edit?id=110653 all of the links Carolyn has prepared for us are in the
Livebinder
20:34 - @shamblesguru
But the kids loved it
20:41 - Peggy George
I remember those reel to reel projectors!!! We actually had to take a class on how to run them
in my undergrad program :-)
20:42 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
I remember being the go to person when antoher teacher couldn't get the film to paly properly.
20:49 - Peggy George
how fun Paula!
21:19 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Threading a film projector was an incrediblably valuable tech skill long ago. LOL
21:22 - Susie Highley @shighley
Lots of our teachers would drive downtown on Thursday nights to the library's film building
21:32 - Peggy George
I'm always so amazed at how small our technology is today compared to the early tape
recorders, video cameras, etc.
21:33 - Tracy Brady
it's so funny to think about how far we've come!
21:50 - @Len_Horn
filmstrips with cassettes :)
22:03 - Peggy George
love that @Susie!!
22:03 - Don Shegog
Those Macs take me back
22:09 - Jan Robertson
I STILL have Clarisworks on my new MacBook because I LOVE its simplicity!!!
22:18 - Susie Highley @shighley
the wonder of a Dukane filmstrip projector that advanced on its own
22:58 - Don Shegog
I would love to find out more about the build a business - I want to do this for my tech classes
in 5th and 6th grade
23:08 - Peggy George
I'm hoping that sometime soon we won't be talking about Mac and PC platforms and
everything will be accessible to all!
23:14 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Oh Suie I remember other teachers having Dukane projector envy.
23:44 - Susie Highley @shighley
although that cut out having kids do the honor of advancing the filmstrip
24:18 - Susie Highley @shighley
that's how it should be done more now; integrating into subject matter
24:28 - Tracy Brady
yes, Susie!!
24:47 - Peggy George
we have so many more options now for addressing competencies--tons of word publishing
options :-)
25:39 - sbatstone
Hello to my felow EDT classmates from National
25:55 - Susie Highley @shighley
Love the idea of including digital literacy in walkthroughs
26:01 - Don Shegog
Gotta love the C.O.Ws
26:18 - Peggy George
I love hearing the personal stories about how people have moved from very traditional to
integrated technology for collaboration/communication among students!! So inspiring!
26:52 - Peggy George
we should do a continuum and ask everyone to mark where their school is on this
continuum :-)
27:29 - Peggy George
how many of your schools have computer labs where you have to sign up for your computer
period?
27:38 - Tracy Brady
my school does
27:45 - susana
my school
27:46 - stidmama
what an amazing journey -- I am getting so many ideas just from this story
27:50 - @Len_Horn
Is anyone using Safari Montage?
27:55 - Tracy Brady
is anyone out there a big fan of IWBs?
28:03 - Susie Highley @shighley
that's when we bought BlackBoard
28:11 - Toni
@shamblesguru Here is a link to a webinar by Lisa Dabbs included in there is a youtube
video on stats concerning how many teachers are using social media
28:22 - Eileen K
We are just getting Safari back this year. Great resource!
28:28 - Toni
opps will bet that
28:29 - Peggy George
IWBs can be fantastic if they are used so kids can use them and not just as presenter tools for
the teacher
28:30 - Vicky Sedgwick @visionsbyvicky
@Peggy, we have a computer lab but I can't get the classroom teachers to use it and it's
available all morning every day.
28:34 - Tracy Brady
we used to have blackboard....then the dist discontinued
28:43 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
I got one of our COWS in my classroom fulltime in 2004 because no one else was checkig it
out. Asked principal if I could keep it in my room and she said yes because she knew I would
use it every day.
28:54 - Tracy Brady
good for you Paula!
28:54 - Don Shegog
We have 1 computer lab for middle school, 1 cart each for 5th, 6th, 7th and each 8th grader
has their own netbook to use during the day. they do not take it home.
29:02 - Peggy George
Safari Montage has incredible videos for schools but it's pretty expensive
29:08 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
I know Whiney, she is awesome.
29:10 - stidmama
wow Don, that sounds like a dream!
29:17 - Peggy George
love that @Paula!!!
29:25 - Don Shegog
It is a blessing to be in a private school
29:41 - Eileen K
Yes, Safari is expensive but our Intermedite Unit is sponsoring it for all the school districts in
our county.
29:41 - Peggy George
do you all know what BYOD is? Bring Your Own Device
29:42 - clinds
Has anyone checked out the new science ebooks that Discovery Ed has created? Interested
in getting away from paper science books!
29:45 - stidmama
:-D @ Don
29:48 - srollins
computer lab in my school is still used as a prep class for all grades.
29:49 - Susie Highley @shighley
what is Whitney
29:52 - Tracy Brady
I'm a HUGE believer in BYOD!
29:54 - Susie Highley @shighley
Whitney
30:02 - Jan Robertson
Technology SHOULD go to the people who are going to use it. Should NOT be allowed to
collect dust!
30:02 - Susie Highley @shighley
s last name?
30:03 - Peggy George
yes @clinds! The new science materials are incredible!!
30:06 - faith #2
Vicky - we have 3 full computer labs that are used almost every period (at Carolyn's school)
30:09 - Candace
Hi everyone. La Plata, Southern MD. Neighborhoods around me are being evacuated
(lowlying)
30:14 - Don Shegog
I have the 5th & 6th once a week and integrate with 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th core teachers
30:22 - susana
how do you manage BYOD?
30:25 - Lisa Dabbs
@Tracey...have taught the use of IWB's as a Kaplan Consultant. Have seen amazing
teachers, including my sister who is a MiddleSchool math teacher, use them with great
success!
30:28 - Vicky Sedgwick @visionsbyvicky
It's a prep class at our school too, however, I still integrate into what's going on in the
classroom.
30:37 - Toni
link for social media stats embedded in Lisa Dabbs presentation "The New Teacher Tool Kit
Webinar" google it I just watched it yesterday and it's amazing
30:38 - stidmama
Candace, I hope all will be well with you -- I have many friends in the tidewater region
30:40 - clinds
@Peggy - Is the Discovery Ed science curriculum really expensive? It DOES look amazing!
30:47 - Don Shegog
How much is it to access the Discovery Ed cscience book?
31:00 - Tracy Brady
I have students share if not all have devices, I let them use mine, I have a policy I provide to
them at the beginning of the year
31:20 - Candace
We have safari and discovery, but only about 25 computers that work for 1400 students.
31:22 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
@Candance Wishing you and your area get through this safely. I'm from Hew Orleans and
know how devastating hurricanes can be.
31:27 - Don Shegog
We allow but do not encourage BYOD
31:40 - Peggy George
this is such a fascinating story and really shows what a difference one teacher can make by
introducing new tools to teachers at their school!
31:51 - Tracy Brady
@Don if your students have netbooks, BYOD might be redundant
32:00 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Luckily I have 15 netbooks for my students to share.
32:15 - Peggy George
great idea Tracy!!! teachers can share their mobile devices with kids
32:23 - McTeach (Karen)
Here's the DE link: http://www.discoveryeducation.com/
32:29 - Peggy George
thanks Karen
32:32 - Don Shegog
The 8th are the only ones with a netbook - 5th 6th 7th are usually the ones who BYOD
32:44 - Tracy Brady
I also use Google Voice, and for voice recording, students can use the classroom landline
32:58 - Peggy George
keep going Carolyn
33:04 - sbatstone
echo here
33:07 - Lisa Dabbs
Here is the Social Media youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=QzZyUaQvpdc&feature=related
33:08 - Tracy Brady
echo here too
33:12 - stidmama
someone turned on their mike without headphones
33:18 - Peggy George
another mic accidentally turned on
33:20 - Don Shegog
@tracy how do you use google voice, for lesons, suplements
33:27 - Toni
Thank you Lisa!!
33:27 - clinds
Yes!
33:29 - stidmama
you sound great
33:30 - Peggy George
you're fine Carolyn
33:51 - Lisa Dabbs
@Toni...you are most welcome!
34:14 - Tracy Brady
I teach French, and I use Google Voice for speaking activities -- students record themselves
speaking in voicemails -- usually responding to questions that I ask in class, or as HW
responding to questions my Voki asks
35:00 - Peggy George
this is a great way to get started with something new--start small, pilot it and then expand
35:04 - Eileen K
That sounds great, Tracy :)
35:19 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
In the first 2 weeks of school my students have used netbooks to make word clouds on
Tagxedo, write their first blog post on kidblog.org, log into our Edmodo group to access
BrainPop and Discovery videos, use the online resources I have listed on our eBoard to
practice math skills. They love using technology. We even Skyped on the third day of school.
35:30 - Don Shegog
@tracy that sounds great. have you ever looked at lingtlanguage.com? it allows much of the
same thing but allows you to set up a classroom
35:35 - Susie Highley @shighley
Did you start out with using email? I know some districts using evetrything but the student
email
35:41 - Tracy Brady
tagxedo is great
35:45 - stidmama
I used the survey function to do "online tests" last year -- loved how it automatically created a
spreadsheet that showed how all the kids did
35:52 - Tracy Brady
@don no...I'll have to check that out
36:10 - Peggy George
I love the point about students driving teachers to consider using the tools!!! :-)
36:41 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Kids will use the tools if we allow them to.
36:42 - Don Shegog
Iam interested in Google docs, but dont you have to convert all email to gmail first?
36:44 - Peggy George
isn't this so exciting!!!!
36:55 - Daniela Arghir Bunea
no, Don
36:57 - Elle (@Elle_Gifted)
We are a Google District. Unfortunately, teachers only know how to use it for gmail.
37:03 - Peggy George
great question Don! we'll ask Carolyn later
37:15 - Tracy Brady
@Elle that is so sad....there is so much that can be done with Google tools!
37:29 - Peggy George
Link to student group project on Anubis -ancient Greece study:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4l9rSg6J88
37:31 - Jan Robertson
Love the idea of groups made from different classrooms!
37:33 - Susie Highley @shighley
Great idea. Kids working together in different periods. Very interesting
37:35 - Elle (@Elle_Gifted)
I know! I am using it a lot more this year. So excited!
37:56 - Don Shegog
I have used them personally and we have the teachers creating forms, but we have not
allowed the students to create accounts due to COPPA
38:13 - Peggy George
http://photostory3.pbworks.com/w/page/16525565/download (Instructions for downloading
PhotoStory 3)
38:13 - stidmama
the ability for collaboration outside of real-time is exciting
38:29 - Elle (@Elle_Gifted)
Our district has created student accounts, but I won't allow them to put any personal
information.
38:40 - Susie Highley @shighley
that's like my district saying they were blocking pbworks and wikispaces because they violate
FERPA! I told them thousands of schools were using them
38:58 - Tracy Brady
@Elle yes..it's very important to have guidelines for students about not sharing personal info
online
39:02 - Don Shegog
PhotoStory works OK with Windows 7?
39:04 - Tracy Brady
glogster rocks!
39:10 - Peggy George
those choices for students are so valuable!!
39:12 - espanol
VoiceThread can be used for this project too!
39:15 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
I have used Google docs to have kids create surveys so they could collect data to graph in
math class.
39:22 - Don Shegog
We did PD on Glogster this summer and the teachers loved it
39:26 - Jan Robertson
I love Glogster but my board blocks it... even Glogster Edu!
39:27 - Peggy George
Google docs make it so easy to collaborate in real time!!
39:30 - Don Shegog
Don't forget Animoto
39:53 - Peggy George
that's so sad Jan!! even the education version for Glogster?? have they seen it?
40:12 - clinds
I'm hoping to start using Google sites for ePortfolios with middle school students...
40:16 - Don Shegog
Love voicethread but it does not go through our content filter
40:20 - Jan Robertson
@peggy Yes, and I've battled for ages now, but I'm not giving up!
40:38 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Heard Glogster Edu is changing pricing policy on Sept 15.
40:49 - Susie Highley @shighley
we did get glogster edu unblocked. Show them examples from other distructs
40:52 - Peggy George
this is an incredible resource for learning about Google apps http://iste2011.googleapps.com/
40:59 - Elle (@Elle_Gifted)
Yes, I'm very disappointed with Glogster right now, Paula!
41:00 - stidmama
did my master's presentation using prezi!
41:03 - Don Shegog
Yeah, I hate the new Glogster.edu pricing
41:08 - Peggy George
good for you Jan!!! don't give up!
41:17 - Don Shegog
Prezi is definitely fun
41:21 - Elle (@Elle_Gifted)
Thanks for sharing this link, Peggy!

I've used Moodle a lot but never tried Schoology - curious to find out how they compare.
42:26 - @shamblesguru
Isnt it amazing when you reflect back that none of these opportunities were available 10 years
ago ... I wonder what is in store for the next ten
42:35 - Don Shegog
@paula I don't think the accounts go away, but they will no longer be affiliated with your
acount. they will become single accounts
42:55 - faith #2
I haven't seen students so excited about any new program like they were about goanimate.
43:27 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)

1:18:52 - Carolyn Stanley

1:18:54 - Peggy George
sounds great as long as we only have one mic turned on
1:19:35 - Peggy George
I'm really glad to hear about the email not needed for Google docs--thanks @clinds!
1:19:58 - @shamblesguru
answer to that Google Docs question also at http://www.shambles.net/pages/learning/infolit/

1:20:07 - Peggy George

1:20:28 - Peggy George
thanks Shambles! I'll add that link to the livebinder for today!
1:21:02 - Peggy George
these are great questions!!! :-)
1:21:12 - Elle (@Elle_Gifted)
Google Sites
1:22:04 - clinds
Has anyone tried using Google sites for student ePortfolios? I've seen a couple examples and
seems like it would work great for this.
1:22:23 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
I have buit so many Google sites.
1:22:23 - Peggy George
We use Weebly for our Classroom 2.0 LIVE website and it is very easy to use--both free and
premium versions
1:22:45 - Tammy Moore
Weebly is what we are trialing this year in our project for portfolios.
1:22:56 - @shamblesguru
Google Appls for ePortfolios ... link at http://www.shambles.net/pages/staff/ARandR/portfolios/
1:23:00 - Peggy George
there are many examples of Google Sites for eportfolios-I have also created a website on
Google and love it
1:23:03 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Dr. Helen Barrett is the eporfolio guru.
1:23:41 - clinds
@Shambles - Thanks for the eportfolio link!
1:23:46 - Peggy George
she sure is!! Helen Barrett has amazing examples of eportfolios
1:23:54 - Peggy George
Yes
1:23:58 - @Len_Horn
scoology?
1:23:58 - Peggy George
Collaboraize Classroom!!
1:24:19 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
eportfolio info from Helen Barrett http://electronicportfolios.com/

http://www.collaborizeclassroom.com

1:25:06 - Peggy George
it's similar to Moodle
1:25:11 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Edmodo is great for younger students because they don't need an email account. Teacher
sets up group and teacher shares group code with students.
1:25:29 - Elle (@Elle_Gifted)
Yes, Paula you got me on Edmodo!
1:25:29 - Peggy George
I think Edmodo is the most incredible management system these days!
1:25:40 - Elle (@Elle_Gifted)
It's very secure and easy to use.
1:25:48 - Susie Highley @shighley
probably edmodo. One of our teachers is using it in a way similar to what you described for
collaborize classroom
1:25:54 - Peggy George
Edmodo has so much more power and flexibility than I ever realized!!
1:26:31 - Peggy George
AFter I participated in the Edmodocon day of learning and heard so many teachers share
what they were doing with Edmodo I was an instant convert!
1:26:52 - Elle (@Elle_Gifted)
There's a great community of teachers/classes on Edmodo.
1:26:53 - Angela Allen-Anderson 1
Do you have to pay for the Scholastic student webinars?
1:26:54 - @plnaugle(Paula Naugle)
Edmodo can be as closed or as open as you want. It depends who you share the group code
with. I start with closed group and as year progress I set up collaborative groups with other
classes around the country.
1:27:14 - Peggy George
this was their presentation schedule for Edmodocon http://blog.edmodo.com/2011/07/25/
edmodocon-2011-presentation-schedule/
1:27:25 - Elle (@Elle_Gifted)
That's exactly the approach I am taking with Edmodo, Paula!
1:27:32 - Susie Highley @shighley
I was already in school for edmodocon Bummer
1:27:39 - Elle (@Elle_Gifted)
Start private and then connect with other classrooms.
1:27:44 - Peggy George
They have posted one BIG recording for the day and are working on breaking them down into
sessions. You can just scroll ahead to hear the sessions you are interested in
1:27:48 - Eileen K
We have done webinars from Scholatic and they were free.
1:27:56 - Peggy George

extranorml has a few more "non school" things in it
1:28:43 - clinds
A little more info on Google Apps for Education without email - your IT person would have to
just get a domain name (they might already have one) that can be used for Google Apps for
Ed. This way they're not using their existing mail domain for Google Apps and the current
email stays just the way it is. Students then use this domain name when logging onto Google
and they'll just see Google Docs, if that's all you turn on from the administrator console .
Hopefully IT people will be more willing to sign the school up for this since they don't have to
change anything that's already set up.
1:28:44 - Elle (@Elle_Gifted)
Thanks, Peggy! Have to prep and practice with my students first!
1:28:47 - Peggy George
