CLASSROOM 2.0 LIVE WEBINAR: “IWitness: Multi-media lessons for HS and MS using testimony of genocide survivors” with Dr. Kori Street

March 21, 2015

00:13 - Peggy George
today is OUR day!!!!

00:52 - Peggy George
This topic has implications for other issues including bullying!

01:19 - Rob Kuznia
That's exactly right Peggy!

01:20 - stidmama
The topic is hard for me, my grandmother lost friends during this period in history, and it hurt until the day she died. We'll see how long I last.

01:29 - Peggy George
We are thrilled to have Dr. Kori Street presenting for us today!!!

01:35 - Steve Hayes @Hayes_EdTech 1
The quality of their videos are excellent

01:55 - Peggy George
I know what you mean @stidmama A very personal kind of experience!

02:28 - tam
Both of my grandfathers were in German prison camps, one in Mauthausen, the other in Banjica in Belgrade :(

02:41 - Peggy George
they will never forget once they view these videos and have a chance to discuss them

02:45 - Peggy George
Definitely Kori!

03:10 - Erica Jordan (Houston, TX) 1

03:23 - Peggy George
That's fascinating that it is even being used as young as grade 2!

03:37 - Peggy George
This is the heart of the message!!! So important!!

03:46 - Peggy George (Home page for IWitness)

03:59 - Rob Kuznia

04:04 - Peggy George
such a timely message!!!

04:23 - Peggy George (About IWitness)

05:04 - Peggy George
Steven Spielberg actually attended my HS in Phoenix AZ--Arcadia HS :-)

05:28 - Peggy George
wow!!! that's a lot of testimonies!!! Powerful!!

05:59 - Rob Kuznia
no kidding? I had no idea he grew up there...I guess he's the rare AZ native

06:05 - Erica Jordan (Houston, TX) 1

06:10 - Peggy George
haha! 18 hours!

07:10 - Peggy George
hearing those firsthand stories is an experience most of us will never have and this is such an incredible resource!

07:57 - Peggy George
we'll use web tour for this. Click on play when it loads

08:22 - Peggy George

08:32 - Peggy George
you can view in your browser if that's easier

08:38 - Peggy George
It's 2:51 mins.

08:58 - Peggy George
it's playing for me now :-) how about you?

08:59 - Dr Kori Street
let us know if you cannot see it or hear it. It is a short video of Kurt Messerschmidt and an experience he had in Germany as a teenager

09:11 - Rob Kuznia
it's playing for me

09:17 - tam
i see it

09:21 - Peggy George
great Rob! Thanks tam!

09:24 - Lorie Moffat
It didn't eben start for me in webtour.

09:42 - Peggy George
Kurt Messerschmidt is a Holocaust survivor who describes what he observed in the aftermath of the Kristallnacht pogrom in Berlin, Germany, in November 1938. This clip is appropriate because it touches on what it means to be a bystander, which is a concept that often resonates with kids who witness bullying.

10:10 - Rob Kuznia
Thanks for providing this context Peggy

10:27 - Peggy George
:-) Thanks to your support Rob!

10:36 - Rob Kuznia

10:50 - Dr Kori Street
He also speaks to the harm that silence can do - to not speaking up, using your voice

11:08 - Peggy George
this would provide so much for student conversation!!! bystanders!!!

11:16 - stidmama
So sad. I had to load it in the browser.

11:31 - Peggy George
the video is also in our Livebinder today :-)

11:43 - Peggy George

12:16 - Peggy George
great point!! can just be about speaking up and standing up!

12:58 - Peggy George
how often do we remember more after we hear someone else share their memories--that is so true for me!

13:23 - Peggy George
this kind of primary source won't be found in textbooks!!!

13:41 - Peggy George
Hi Jackie! I'm so glad you could join us!!

13:46 - Steve Hayes @Hayes_EdTech 1
Kurt's video about him singing a song - and showing his resistance is also great

13:59 - stidmama
What Mr. Messerschmidt did as a child is what I hope I would do -- or my sons -- or my students: he did "something" and it wasn't big, but it was important that he did something to let the man know he wasn't alone and to show the bystanders that something could be done.

14:03 - @jackiegerstein
Hi Peggy - this is a good "program"

14:28 - Peggy George
Hi Dotty! Welcome!

14:49 - Dejan Kreculj

15:07 - @jackiegerstein

15:10 - Peggy George
Hi Wes and Dejan! Great to have you joining us!!

15:11 - Rob Kuznia
Kids really connect with this introduces them to a person who has been touched by history -- a person who looks like a grandparent or neighbor

15:34 - Dotty
Good morning on day 2 of spring

15:56 - Peggy George
You'll be able to see the resources Kori is sharing today in our Livebinder. Be sure to watch the videos if you missed the first one by Kurt.

25:57 - Peggy George
I wasn't familiar with the term "conatively" and had to look it up. :-) Conative is one of three parts of the mind, along with the affective and cognitive. In short, the cognitive part of the brain measures intelligence, the affective deals with emotions and the conative drives how one acts on those thoughts and feelings.

26:28 - Peggy George
powerful slide!!!

27:06 - Peggy George
wouldn't you love to hear your students come to that understanding??!! I am changed!!

33:59 - Rob Kuznia
One student watched the activity with the testimony of a Holocaust survivor who recounts how people in her European hometown just before World War II treated Jews wearing the yellow star as if they were invisible. It occurred to the student that this is how she treats the homeless. She decided to make sandwiches and deliver them to homeless people in her community -- I love that story
