Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar, Fostering learning, engagement, and community with Remind with special guests: Jordan Pedraza, Michael Buist, Carla Jefferson, and Joe Oliphant

March 26, 2016

00:01 - Joe Oliphant
No-brainer...but some admins have different goals surrounding community

00:09 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Hi Michael Buist. How are you doing?

00:14 - stidmama
Missed the intro -- PacNW by the Salish Sea, teaching 3rd grade and LOVE these sessions!

00:14 - Peggy George
Welcome to all of you! We're so glad you're here!

00:26 - Peggy George
thanks @stidmama!!!

00:31 - Jordan Pedraza
Joe has a great point. There's many ways to communicate and build community.

01:02 - @plnaugle(Paula)
So excited to be here to learn more about Remind with Jordan and the crew.

01:14 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Hi Wes!

01:21 - Jordan Pedraza
We're happy to be here! :)

01:23 - @wfryer
hello everyone from Oklahoma City :-)

02:13 - Patti Ruffing
Hi Wes

02:39 - Michael Buist
Brett K., with all those accomplishments Jordan deserves a raise!

02:45 - Jordan Pedraza

03:13 - Peggy George
Hi Vicky! Welcome!!!

04:10 - Peggy George
I wish I had been able to use all of these great digital communication tools when I was a principal!!! All we had at that time was the homework hotline that would call all parents in the school.

04:28 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
It's powerful how far we've advanced, Peggy!

04:33 - Joe Oliphant
I think it is important to have a convenient way for a majority of parents( no matter their tech understanding) to be able to access information for their children.

04:58 - Peggy George
so true Joe!!! Convenience is so important!

05:03 - Michael Buist
Remind certainly streamlines the communication flow.

05:17 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
I definitely agree, Joe. Use as many avenues as possible.

05:22 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Branding our school is important and Remind can help with that.

05:34 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Hi Maureen.

05:35 - Peggy George
appreciate having a quick review of Remind!!!

05:44 - Joe Oliphant
Paula...what are you doing to brand?

05:57 - @wfryer
Remind was the best platform for staying in touch with my after school STEM club parents last year

06:00 - Peggy George
If you're just joining this is our Livebinder link with lots of great Remind resources!!

06:12 - Peggy George
Hi Wes! So glad you could join us!!

06:20 - @bcdtech maureen
New java does not work with my chrome browser! Hate Java updates... but FF still worked

06:21 - Peggy George
Welcome Maureen! Great to see you!

06:39 - Peggy George
so sorry Maureen!!! Java is so annoying!!

06:52 - @bcdtech maureen
Hi Paula and Peggy! and Wes!

06:55 - @wfryer
email is primary with teachers and staff at our school

07:07 - @plnaugle(Paula)
We are selecting a new mascot, adding our mission statement to everything, and sharing out our good news.

07:13 - @bcdtech maureen
email and a first call system

07:17 - @plnaugle(Paula)

07:17 - Tammy Moore
e-mail, Moodle messages, Facebook Group

07:28 - Peggy George
some of the best communication with parents happens in the parking log and at curbside as students come and go. :-) no tech required for that :-) but so important for relationship building!

07:39 - Lorie Moffat
Canvas messages, email, phone calls

07:39 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
Or Walmart, Peggy! :-)

07:43 - Joe Oliphant
One of our admin goals this year was communication to parents. Surveys were lacking as I came to this school after 5 years at another school. In conjunction with REMIND, I sent home email blasts, Twitter updates and Instagram.

07:45 - @wfryer
hi @bcdtech Maureen :-)

07:46 - Peggy George
definitely email and now Facebook :-)

07:58 - Peggy George
haha Carla! That is so true!!!!

08:26 - Peggy George (PEW Research: 6 Facts about Americans and their SmartPhones)

08:30 - Michael Buist
Tammy, how effective do you thing the emails campaigns are? Seems like emails can get lost in the flow of information throughout the day.

08:36 - Peggy George (PEW Research: Teens and Social Media)

08:45 - Peggy George (Grunwald Mobile Study Public Report)

08:48 - Joe Oliphant
I have a 7th grader and have her subscribe to the same REmind updates that I do for her school.

08:55 - Peggy George (Mashable: The Power of Text Message Marketing-Infographic)

09:04 - Peggy George
Those are the links from the previous slide.

09:13 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Yes, more parents are visiting our Facebook page, but unfortunately FB is blocked at school, so everything has to be added after hours at home.

09:14 - Peggy George
love that idea Joe!!

09:24 - @wfryer
very cool that built-in translation is a feature!

09:41 - Peggy George
@Paula that is such a challenge! Hoping that will keep improving!!!

09:49 - stidmama
I hadn't seen the built-in translation yet... glad to know it's an option now.

10:01 - Joe Oliphant
I am deliberate about having the conversation with her..."Hey...your teacher just sent an update about your quiz tomorrow...where are your notes? Let's study!"

10:06 - Peggy George
all of these links are also in our Livebinder for today:

10:07 - Susie @shighleyl
Can't imagine the server space!

10:23 - Peggy George
that is such a great feature about phone numbers!!

10:31 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Love that level of privacy.

10:31 - Peggy George
Welcome jelenag!

10:51 - @wfryer
that's a lot of messages delivered

10:54 - Peggy George
incredible!!!! 2 million teachers :-) Remind has grown so much!

11:21 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
And in such a short amount of's a testament to how valuable it is!

11:22 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Wish more of my parents would join my Remind groups.

11:23 - Susie @shighleyl
One way our principal got staff off-- it's the earliest way to learn about school closing shift!

11:25 - Peggy George
I get at least 6 Remind notifications every day from other educators and groups :-)

11:43 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Same here, Peggy.

11:46 - Susie @shighleyl
Don't know where that 'shift' came from

11:53 - Peggy George
you can do this right now :-) Join her sample class.

12:00 - Michael Buist
Let's talk about ways to get people signed up. There are so many ways and many of them are super easy.

12:10 - @bcdtech maureen
The hidden benefits of not having a cell phone...

12:20 - Joe Oliphant
Susie...I use it for the same takes longer to log into to email and the news stations....REMINd is my 1st go-to.

13:01 - Peggy George
Got your message Jordan!!!

13:37 - Joe Oliphant
Stinks that that Verizon guy doesn't like my neighborhood. He stops about 1/2 mile away..hahaha... NO COVERAGE

13:56 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
*gasp* Oh, no...Joe!

14:00 - Michael Buist
If you're looking for edtech that is "teacher obsessed", Remind is the place!

14:11 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
That's like my parents house. I call it the "black hole".....

14:36 - @wfryer
the office hours feature is great to share your teacher boundaries with parents

14:48 - Peggy George
how frustrating that must be for you Joe!!! No "e-Innovator" should be without wifi/data!!!

14:57 - stidmama
We don't actually have cell coverage at our house, chose a carrier that allows wi-fi access. When I am actually AT home I can get messages! Of course, Remind also sends me an email when a parent wants to contact me, so I see that when I log in to my school email. :-)

15:00 - Michael Buist
Office hours is a great digital citizenship discussion.

15:12 - Joe Oliphant
I like trying to be creative with my implementation with REMIND. Audio option...attachments...linking Youtube

15:16 - Peggy George
I agree Wes!! Really makes it easy for parents to contact you!

15:31 - Joe Oliphant
Any other creative ideas...whats your favorite?

15:36 - Peggy George
scheduling reminders should be a great help!!!

15:45 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
Sending memes are my favorite!

15:53 - Michael Buist
Joe, love the audio feature. I often have students send voice notes to their families via Chat.

16:04 - Peggy George
@stidmama great to know how you manage that!

16:05 - Joe Oliphant when Remind says..."this seems like a late message...Are you sure?"

16:36 - Peggy George
if you have any questions for Jordan or any of our presenters please type them in the chat and Lorie will ask them during Q/A

16:50 - Peggy George
Hi Harvey! So glad you could join us!

17:03 - @plnaugle(Paula)
I send out a GDoc with the week's HW that includes links to everything needed for the week. Over the weekend I schedule the message to be sent out Monday morning.

17:17 - Peggy George
what a huge help to have the translations available!!!

17:24 - @wfryer
didn't know about attaching content to messages - fantastic!

17:28 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Here is an example of HW GDoc I send -

17:44 - Michael Buist
Adding pics is super powerful as a communication tool. Do this in Chat or as a general announcement.

17:49 - Peggy George
how exciting!!! had no idea you could attach all of those things!!!

17:59 - Joe Oliphant you find that your principal follows your REMIND updates and give you those cool stamps?

18:07 - Michael Buist
Having students or parents "caption" a picture.

18:10 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Love the translation feature because I have to cover 5 different languages.

18:23 - Peggy George
That would be a great way to create an end-of-year review for parents and students--using the archived Remind notices :-)

18:24 - Susie @shighleyl
Here's a nice example of a school sharing all of the teachers

18:28 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
What a neat

18:30 - stidmama
I don't think the principal is on my Remind account -- but I sure am on his! LOL

18:30 - Susie @shighleyl

18:32 - Peggy George
Perfect Michael!! Hearing you great!

18:58 - Joe Oliphant
I like to validate teachers who are using this tool.

19:27 - Peggy George
thanks for your link Susie!!

19:29 - Joe Oliphant
Its great to see students giving stamps on each of the messages

19:56 - Peggy George
you have found some great ways to use Remind Joe!! So glad you're here to share with us today!

20:21 - Susie @shighleyl
I met Brett at ISTE in San Antonio in 2013. I have a son named Brett, so that's how our conversation started!

21:02 - Peggy George (Michael Buist on Twitter)

21:10 - Peggy George (Michael Buist’ Blog)

21:43 - Peggy George (Jordan Pedraza on Twitter)

22:32 - Peggy George
I'm sure parents really appreciate the homework reminders. :-) And kids know they know :-)

22:35 - @wfryer
Remind is a great platform for "inside sharing" in the classroom. I'm going to add it to this book project I'm working on w @sfryer

22:59 - Peggy George
the addition of pictures is fantastic! really personalizes the message!

23:37 - Jordan Pedraza
Yes, love the "inside sharing" - so helpful for giving parents more insight into what their children are learning and doing!

23:50 - Peggy George
such a great point! Not all parents use social media so being able to receive text messages (without a smartphone) is really important

24:20 - Peggy George
Michael, I would love to visit your school! Sounds fantastic!

24:46 - @wfryer
great story from Michael about ways to reduce phone calls from parents!

25:44 - Peggy George
Twitter for Michael's school--check it out :-) Knox Gifted Academy in Chandler AZ

25:56 - Joe Oliphant
That chat feature is awesome

26:30 - Jordan Pedraza
Yes, celebrating wins or successes adds a personal touch and builds partnerships with parents :)

26:31 - Peggy George
every parent loves to get those positive comments and voice notes make it so easy!!! Awesome!!

26:51 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Just sent my first Remind notice with a picture from Thursday attached. :)

27:44 - Peggy George
How do you know when someone sends you a Remind notification whether you can respond to it or not? I have sometimes tried to reply & get msg that I have to contact them another way.

28:05 - Peggy George
Fantastic stories and examples Michael!! Thank you!!!

28:53 - Peggy George
these are wonderful examples!!!! love that they invite people to interact with captions :-)

29:13 - Joe Oliphant
Is there a limit for the audio files?

29:18 - Jordan Pedraza
30 seconds

29:32 - Peggy George
How long do those voice messages remain available?

29:41 - Jordan Pedraza

29:46 - @wfryer
"Least common denominator" communications platforms for parents are important. @remind is powerful because SMS is a least common denominator (LCD) tool in this sense. Most parents have and know how to use SMS!

29:59 - Joe Oliphant
great job Michael

30:08 - Peggy George
if you use social media like Facebook/Twitter you know exactly what to do with those stars. :-)

30:22 - Peggy George
Thank you so much Michael! That was great!

30:34 - Peggy George (Carla Jefferson on Twitter)

30:41 - Peggy George (Carla Jefferson’ Blog)

30:46 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Loved hearing your Remind story, Michael. Thanks for sharing.

31:33 - Peggy George
so true!!! those backpacks are definitely a black hole :-)

32:01 - Susie @shighleyl
The lockers, too

32:40 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Love Kahoot.

32:43 - Jordan Pedraza
We now support multiple owners for a class too! So multiple teachers or staff can all send out messages

32:46 - Peggy George
a team account sounds like it would be really helpful for parents and also the teachers so they can see the homework demands on the students each day.

32:53 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Have just started using Quizizz.

33:21 - Peggy George
Fantastic idea about Quizziz!!! Very engaging!

34:07 - Peggy George
Do they play and practice on Quizziz on their computers and the Remind notification reminds them to join the online game?

34:25 - Peggy George
wow! a board member signed on! Awesome!!!

34:33 - Joe Oliphant
Love the idea to share tech tips.

34:47 - Michael Buist
I now have my Admin using Remind for Schools. Time for me to show her how to use it as a messaging service for the Knox Gifted faculty.

35:08 - Joe Oliphant
Ever had anyone say that you sent out too many messages?

36:03 - Susie @shighleyl
Do you ever have any people who drop out of the Remind group?

36:59 - Peggy George
I love the Remind inspiration I get from EDcouraged! Always encouraging and uplifting! Like "You've survived the week! The days of the school year are drawing closer to the end. You'll make it! I promise you will...Over Spring break remember the good things from this year. Let yourself see the difference you're making. You rock!

37:44 - Peggy George
I don't mind getting many remind messages each day but I turn off the sound notification so I just receive the visual notification.

37:50 - Jordan Pedraza
Yes, Edcouraged is great! The code is @EdCouraged - text that to 81010 or go to add that code on the app

38:01 - Jordan Pedraza
or go to

38:03 - Peggy George
Love those examples Carla!!!

38:16 - @wfryer
great tip on @EdCoursaged - thanks Jordan!

38:38 - Jordan Pedraza
Joe Blizzard, who owns the class, is amazing :)

39:13 - Peggy George
thanks for sharing the link Jordan (@edcouraged Always inspirational!

39:23 - Peggy George
Hi Laura! Welcome!

39:52 - Laura Antichi
Hi, Peggy!

40:35 - Peggy George
So excited to be hearing about Remind from the Principal perspective!

40:54 - Peggy George (Joe Oliphant on Twitter)

40:58 - Michael Buist
Simple and it's FREE!

41:07 - Peggy George (Joe Oliphant’ wiki)

41:19 - Peggy George (Propel Schools Facebook page)

41:53 - Peggy George
Lots of resources from Remind here: (Remind Resources)

43:12 - Peggy George
There is a great short video in the Livebinder re new features-- Web walk-through of new features; Aug. 2, 2015

43:32 - Peggy George
love it when that happens!! definitely confirms and validates your communication!

43:36 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Just sent out a Quizizz for my students to play via Remind.

43:40 - Michael Buist
One of my struggles is sending links. If a subscriber gets messages on SMS, sometimes the link can be broken between text message "pages". This is not an issue on the app. I often put the shortened link in the beginning of the message.

44:46 - Peggy George
I may have missed all messages from parents just go back to the teacher/principal or can all messages be seen by everyone? Is that an option?

45:09 - Peggy George
Great point Michael!

45:14 - stidmama
Peggy, I can send a "blanket" message to everyone signed up on my Remind, or just open a chat with one or two parents.

45:34 - Peggy George
but can they reply back to everyone or just to you Tammie?

45:52 - stidmama
I use this particularly for parents who work during the times I would have for phone calls... this lets them know what is going on and gives them the chance to call me if they want more.

45:56 - @wfryer
good tip on sharing shortened links first, Michael

45:58 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
Paula....I still have kids texting me on the weekends to see if we're going to play. Even though I'm not their teacher anymore! :-)

46:02 - stidmama
yes, they can reply just to me.

46:04 - Patti Ruffing
Would an open chat be similar to a back channel like Today's Meet, how many can participate

46:11 - Peggy George
every time I see an image like those on the slide I want to click on the star :-)

46:27 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
That chat feature is one on one.

46:37 - Peggy George
Thank you so much Joe!!! So informative!!!

46:39 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
When parents respond it goes only to the teacher.

46:57 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
Parents can't see what other parents type.

46:59 - Peggy George (Remind video channel on YouTube) Lots of great tutorials and tips!

47:21 - Peggy George (Remind Apps)

47:34 - Peggy George
Get the app! Makes it so easy to use!!

47:58 - Peggy George (Strengthen Parent Collaboration with Chat)

48:15 - Peggy George (Remind blog Teacher Tips)

48:28 - Peggy George (Remind for Schools)

48:48 - Michael Buist
Jordan, if a teacher has signed up for Remind but didn't link to a school, can a principal find those people for Remind for Schools?

49:01 - Joe Oliphant
@peggy...the chat would be 1 on 1

49:06 - Peggy George
Can you be logged in as both a teacher and student on your computer to be able to see the messages from both perspectives?

50:02 - Peggy George
thanks Joe! I was curious if you could actually use it as a group collaboration tool but I'm sure your Remind message to send them to another tool like TodaysMeet

50:02 - @wfryer
and remind their twitter handle is @remindHQ and NOT @remind! I made that error earlier today and had to delete some tweets / re-tweet...

50:06 - Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
My teacher partners and I subscribed through texts so that we couuld see what messages our parents received.

50:16 - Michael Buist
Feel free to contact me on Twitter @BuistBunch.

51:28 - stidmama
Once again, thanks for an amazing session -- Learned GREAT tips and ready to implement some new ideas!

51:34 - Joe Oliphant
Thank you all for your ideas. Great job Jordan

51:36 - Peggy George
so many great ideas and wonderful new features!!!!

51:50 - Michael Buist
Jordan, are the code of some of these "public" Remind classes published somewhere?

52:10 - Peggy George
love that question Michael! When does a startup become not a startup :-)

52:27 - Peggy George
startup feels like cutting edge :-)

52:29 - Susie @shighleyl
Good point. My son has been working for a start up for 2 years now!

53:01 - Peggy George (Remind, Messaging App for Education, Now Available Worldwide)

53:19 - Peggy George
great answer Jordan!!!

53:37 - Patti Ruffing
I think I heard you say this will always be free, or am I wrong? How is Remind funded if there are no fees for users?

54:15 - Peggy George
I can never remember which ones I can respond/reply to and which I can't :-)

55:10 - Jordan Pedraza
@Patti - yes, the core messaging will always be free. We're privately funded for now and building new premium features.

55:21 - Joe Oliphant
@carla...this is great that you have students that are connected.

55:49 - Jordan Pedraza
@Michael - yes, I'll tweet out the doc with all the classes I mentioned

56:02 - Peggy George
just because your phone "dings" doesn't mean you have to always answer it immediately :-)

56:51 - Peggy George
can both of those accounts be open at the same time on your computer? teacher/student

56:53 - @wfryer
is there a limit to how many people can be signed up in a Remind channel/class?

56:56 - Joe Oliphant
I am subscribed to all of the teacher's subscriptions...I get LOTs of notifications. I love them though!

57:38 - Michael Buist
Joe, are you part of Remind for Schools?

57:45 - Peggy George
from Carla: Carla (@mrsjeff2u)
For parents that don't have unlimited text, we encourage them to subscribe via email and/or join the app.

58:28 - @wfryer
thanks for answering that question Jordan!

58:28 - Peggy George
incredible that there's no limit on number of people!!!

59:19 - Joe Oliphant
I keep record of these and can easily give it to parents who request them.

59:37 - Joe Oliphant
(all of the remind accounts for teachers)

59:46 - Peggy George
if any of you have any links you can share re Remind and how it's being used please add them here and I'll add them to the Livebinder

1:00:24 - Peggy George
you could start a Voxer chat for people who want to chat beyond the Remind app :-)

1:00:30 - Joe Oliphant
@michael...the group?

1:01:04 - Joe Oliphant
@Peggy...I use Voxer....great tool!

1:01:10 - Peggy George
All of the contact information for our presenters is in the Livebinder :-)

1:01:27 - Susie @shighleyl
Yes, thanks!

1:01:39 - @plnaugle(Paula)
Thank you Jordan, Michael, Carla, and Joe. The more I use Remind, the more I lvoe it. :)

1:01:45 - @wfryer
thanks for a great session to the Classroom 2.0 Live team!

1:01:47 - Michael Buist
@Joe In Remind for Schools you have a robust dashboard that allows you to contact/connect with your teachers. Not sure if you are automatically part of their class. Probably not.

1:01:51 - Jordan Pedraza
Thanks everyone and thanks to our panelists and the Classroom 2.0 Live Team!
