Overview

Podcasting is the distribution of content (which is often audio, but can be video or even PDFs or other content) using the enclosure tag of an RSS feed. The value of podcasting lies in the use of a "podcatcher" -- a specialized aggregator which can query a list of subscriptions and manage downloads. Typically this is done in the middle of the night, or during some other period when computer and network load is low.

The content of a podcast program can be downloaded manually, or though the use of specialized services such as Apple's iTunes music store, but -- technically -- that is not a podcast, merely a digital download. As a result, the term podcast is slowly being usurped to mean any audio program stored on a server and downloaded to a local computer.

The real value of podcasting is the opportunity it affords for people with low bandwidth connections, or with busy daily schedules, to automate the download and storage of large files.
