What RSS Does for Students

  • Helps break down the walls of the classroom to provide connections to the outside world.

Lesson Plans & Ideas

Have students aggregate news sources with the RSS Reader of their choice and publish those onto the public facing side of their Reader. Have them evaluate one another's sources and take guesses about their interests and beliefs.

Have students create their own blog and subscribe to each other. Have them make entries and ask them to stay abreast of one another's ideas. Reference their blogs in class as model participation.

Specific Program Links

Netvibes has a nice feel to it and provides a way to paginate your views so that you can put feeds into different bins and then read them like a newspaper. It is the fastest and smoothest of the flash-based reader. It has a public facing publishing platform called "Universe" which allows me to post all the blogs I'd like to share with the public. To see mine, click here.
Pageflakes is the best reader at publishing aggregations of feeds, called "pagecasts." It's a little slower than Netvibes and has a kind of bubbly, girlie color scheme to it. It is also a flash based reader that goes for a newspaper feel, and has all the features that netvibes does.
